Old Cleveland Road, Brisbane
Old Cleveland Road is a major road in Brisbane, Queensland. It runs from Stones Corner to Capalaba in Brisbane, with most of the route signed as State Route 22. Sections of the road are also part of State Routes 30, 54, and 55. The road is the main route from inner Brisbane to Capalaba and Cleveland since New Cleveland Road only links Tingalpa with Capalaba. The road provides the quickest access to the suburbs of Capalaba and Carindale from Logan Road and the Gateway Motorway, as well as being a main access road for Westfield Carindale Shopping Centre and Capalaba Central Shopping Centre. When completed the Eastern Busway will run parallel to, and (in some parts) in the middle of, the road so bus patrons can avoid severe peak hour traffic congestion road-wide. Carina is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Carina had a population of 11,019 people. Geography Carina is located east of the CBD, and borders Carindale, Carina Heights, Cannon Hill and Camp Hill. Carina is a mostly residential suburb. History Carina was originally inhabited by Murris; most likely the Jagera. The area was first settled by Europeans in the 1850s, with the land mainly used for farming and timber-getting. Old Cleveland Road Tramway Tracks is a heritage-listed tramway along Old Cleveland Road in Camp Hill and Carina, adjoining suburbs in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was built in 1948 by Brisbane City Council. It is also known as Belmont Electric Tramway. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 24 March 2000. History The Old Cleveland Road tramway tracks were laid in 1948 by Brisbane City Council as part of Brisbane's tramway system. They replaced earlier tracks belonging to the Belmont Tramway, constructed in 1912 by the Belmont Shire Council. Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell (15 June 1792 – 5 October 1855), surveyor and explorer of Southeastern Australia, was born at Grangemouth in Stirlingshire, Scotland. In 1827 he took up an appointment as Assistant Surveyor General of New South Wales. The following year he became Surveyor General and remained in this position until his death. Mitchell was knighted in 1839 for his contribution to the surveying of Australia. Brisbane River
The Brisbane River is the longest river in South East Queensland, Australia, and flows through the city of Brisbane, before emptying into Moreton Bay on the Coral Sea. Tingalpa Creek is a creek in South East Queensland. It flows along Brisbane's south east boundary with Redland City Council. On early maps the creek was called both Tunim Creek and Tangulba Creek. Norman Creek (Queensland)
Norman Creek is a small tributary of the Brisbane River. The headwaters of the creek are located on the northern slopes of Toohey Mountain and Mount Gravatt in southern Brisbane. The name derives from a corruption of Gorman's Creek, after Lieutenant Gorman, of H. M. 8th Foot - the last commandant at Moreton Bay. Edmund Lockyer named the waterway Norman Creek in 1825. The creek drains the suburbs of Tarragindi and Holland Park West then flows northwards through Greenslopes, Norman Park and East Brisbane before entering the Brisbane River at Humbug Reach. Moreton Bay Penal Colony
The Moreton Bay Penal Settlement operated from 1825 to 1842. It became the city of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. History The Moreton Bay Penal Settlement was established on the Redcliffe Peninsula on Moreton Bay in 1824, under the instructions of John Oxley that a suitable location would be "easy of access, difficult to escape from, and hard to attack; furthermore, it should be near fresh water and contain three hundred acres for cultivation". Only one year after settlement, the inadequacy of Redcliffe's water supply became apparent and in May 1825 the commandant Lieutenant Henry Miller decided to relocate the settlement to the current Brisbane CBD.
