Oaklands College
Oaklands College is a further education college in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom. It was established in 1991 when further education was reorganised. The college has campuses in St Albans and Welwyn Garden City, with a further provision in Borehamwood. Over 10,000 students study at the college annually, studying full time, part time and higher education courses as well as apprenticeships. History The site of the current St Albans Campus in Smallford, including the historic Mansion House, was purchased by Hertfordshire County Council in 1920. The site opened a year later as the Hertfordshire County Council Agricultural Institute to provide full and part-time courses for home and overseas students. The college was founded by John Hunter Smith, who also served as its first principal. In February 1926, a fire broke out in the roof of the Mansion House, resulting in the gabled roof being replaced by the flat roof which exists today. Harpenden
Harpenden () is a town and civil parish in the City and District of St Albans in the county of Hertfordshire, England. The population of the built-up area was 30,240 in the 2011 census, whilst the population of the civil parish was 29,448. Harpenden is a commuter town, with a direct rail connection through Central London and property prices well over triple the national average. History There is evidence of pre-Roman Belgic farmers in the area. In 1867 several items were found including a bronze escutcheon, rams-head shaped mounts, and a bronze bowl. There are Roman remains in land around Harpenden, for instance the site of a mausoleum in the park at Rothamsted. A tumulus near the river Lea was opened in the 1820s and it contained a stone sarcophagus of Romano-Celtic origin. Jordan Thomas (karateka)
Jordan Thomas (born 10 March, 1992) is a British karateka. In 2016, he became the first British Karate World Champion in 12 years, since Paul Newby's gold medal in 2004. Thomas was also the first British World Games Finalist in 16 Years, the last being Jason Ledgister in 2001. His first major title, in 2014, made him the first British European Karate Champion in 8 years. He is the son of William Thomas who won the 1992 World Karate Championships. Jack Singleton (born 14 May 1996) is an English professional rugby union player who plays at hooker for Premiership Rugby club Gloucester. Club career Singleton came through the Saracens Academy prior to joining Worcester Warriors in 2014. In October 2016 he made his professional debut for Worcester away in Russia against Enisei-STM in the EPCR Challenge Cup. Daryll Neita
Daryll Neita (born 29 August 1996) is a British sprinter. In 2022, she won her first individual international medals, with bronze in the 100 metres at both the European Championships and Commonwealth Games. Neita claimed bronze for the 60 metres at the 2023 European Indoor Championships. She has won several medals as part of Great Britain 4 × 100 m relay teams, including Olympic bronze medals in 2016 and 2021, World Championships silver medals in 2017 and 2019, and European gold in 2018. Maria Lyle
Maria Lyle (born 14 February 2000) is a parasport athlete from Scotland competing mainly in T35 sprint events. At the age of 14 she set a world record in the 200m sprint, a record she has broken on several occasions. In 2014, she qualified for the IPC Athletics European Championships in Swansea and won gold in both the 100m and 200m T35. Personal history Lyle was born in Dunbar, Scotland, in 2000 to Raymond and Susan Lyle. She has one younger sister. She has spastic dipelgic cerebral palsy, attributed to her mother contracting shingles while pregnant with her. Lyle is a former pupil of Dunbar Grammar School, having also attended Oaklands College in Hertfordshire, graduating from the elite Oaklands Wolves Sports Academy in 2017. Joel Awanka S. Kpoku (born 22 June 1999) is an English-born Congolese rugby union lock for Lyon in the French Top 14 Kpoku began playing rugby at school and joined rugby league side London Skolars at 12 years old. He then joined Saracens Amateur RFC in 2013 before being selected to join Saracens academy at under-17s. Olivia Breen
Olivia "Livvy" Breen (born 26 July 1996) is a Welsh Paralympian athlete, who competes for Wales and Great Britain mainly in T38 sprint and F38 long jump events. She qualified for the 2012 Summer Paralympics and was selected for the T38 100m and 200m sprint and was also part of the T35-38 women's relay team. She has also represented Wales at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games winning gold in the F38 Long Jump in 2018 and gold in the T37/38 100m in 2022 . The Oaklands Wolves are an English sports club and academy based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Based at Oaklands College, the basketball academy has an official team which competes professionally in the National Basketball League and Women's British Basketball League. Students at Oaklands College can enrol on a number of different academies including basketball, football, rugby, hockey, athletics and cycling.
