Osypenko, Zaporizhzhia Oblast
Osypenko () is a village (''selo'') in Berdiansk Raion, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, southern Ukraine. It is located on the left bank of the river Berda, and is the administrative center of Osypenko rural hromada. History 19th century The village was established as Novospasivka () in the Russian Empire in 1805 by runaway serfs from Poltava Governorate. By the 1860s, Novospasivka had a population of 3,182 people. 20th century During the Russian Civil War, Novospasivka was the second-most (only behind Huliaipole) important center of the Ukrainian anarchist movement known as the Makhnovshchina. Novospasivka changed hands between the warring factions several times, before eventually falling into control of the Bolsheviks, who established the Soviet Union on much of the former territory of the Russian Empire. Berdiansk Okruha
Berdiansk or Berdyansk (, ; , ) is a port city in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, south-eastern Ukraine. It is on the northern coast of the Sea of Azov, which is connected to the Black Sea. It serves as the administrative center of Berdiansk Raion. The city is named after the 's , at the foot of which it is located. Viktor Bilash
Viktor Fedorovych Bilash (; 1893 – 24 January 1938) was a Ukrainian military commander who was the Chief of Staff of the Revolutionary Insurgent Army of Ukraine (RIAU) under Nestor Makhno during the Russian Civil War. A gifted military commander, Bilash himself planned many of the Insurgent Army's operations, later becoming its commander in chief after Makhno's flight into exile. His son, Oleksandr, a World War II veteran, was able to obtain the manuscript of his father's work, with other previously unknown documents in 1993. He subsequently published it together as a book called “The Roads of Nestor Makhno”. The ongoing military occupation of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Oblast () began after Russian forces launched southern Ukraine campaign, an invasion of mainland Ukraine out of Crimea on 24 February 2022. In Ukraine, a hromada () is the main type of municipality and the third level Administrative divisions of Ukraine, local self-government in Ukraine. The current hromadas were established by the Cabinet of ministers of Ukraine, Government of Ukraine on 12 June 2020. Polina Osipenko
Polina Denisovna Osipenko (, ; 8 October 1907 – 11 May 1939) was a Soviet military pilot who, with Valentina Grizodubova and Marina Raskova on 24–25 September 1938, performed a nonstop flight between Moscow and the Sea of Okhotsk, setting a new women's nonstop flight distance record. For this, they were the first three women made Heroes of the Soviet Union on 2 November 1938. Early life Osipenko was born as Polina Dudnik in 1907 in Novospasovka, Yekaterinoslav Governorate (currently Zaporizhzhia Oblast of Ukraine) to a Ukrainian peasant family and the ninth child born to her family. The Holodomor, also known as the Ukrainian Famine, was a mass famine in Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Ukraine from 1932 to 1933 that killed millions of Ukrainians.
