Orion (rocket)
Orion is the designation of a small American sounding rocket. The Orion has a length of 5.60 meters, a diameter of 0.35 m, a launch weight of 400 kg, a launch thrust of 7 kN and a ceiling of 85 kilometers. The Orion, built by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's Wallops Flight Facility, is also used as an upper stage of sounding rockets, usually paired with a Terrier missile as the first stage, although Nike, Taurus and VS-30 rockets are also used. Two Orion versions exist: * Orion, using a Aerojet M22E8 dual-thrust motor (from the MIM-23A Hawk missile). * Improved Orion using a Aerojet M112 dual-thrust motor (from the MIM-23B I-Hawk missile). Sounding Rocket
A sounding rocket or rocketsonde, sometimes called a research rocket or a suborbital rocket, is an instrument-carrying rocket designed to take measurements and perform scientific experiments during its sub-orbital flight. The rockets are often used to launch instruments from above the surface of the Earth, the altitude generally between weather balloons and satellites; the maximum altitude for balloons is about and the minimum for satellites is approximately . Due to their suborbital flight profile, sounding rockets are often much simpler than their counterparts built for orbital flight. The Barreira do Inferno Launch Center (, ) is a Spaceport, rocket launch base of the Brazilian Space Agency. It was created in 1965, and is located near Ponta Negra beach, near Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Andøya Space, also named Andøya Space Center and formerly Andøya Rocket Range, is a rocket launch site, rocket range, and spaceport on Andøya island (the northernmost in the Vesterålen archipelago) in Andøy Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. Since 1962, over 1,200 sounding and sub-orbital rockets of various configurations have been launched from the site. The Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR) is a Rocket launch site, launch facility and rocket range for sounding rockets in the U.S. state of Alaska, located on a site at Chatanika, Alaska, Chatanika, about 30 miles (50 km) northeast of Fairbanks, Alaska, Fairbanks and 1.5 degrees south of the Arctic Circle. White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) is a United States Army military testing area and firing range located in the US state of New Mexico. Dual-thrust
In a dual-thrust solid propellant rocket engine, the propellant mass is composed of two different types (densities) of fuel. In the case of a tandem dual-thrust motor, the fuel nearest to the rocket nozzle burns fast, and the fuel further into the motor's body burns slower. This gives the rocket higher thrust initially, accelerating it rapidly to high speed. When all the fast-burning propellant has burnt, the slow-burning propellant delivers a lower level of thrust. The first phase of acceleration is called "boost" and the second phase "sustain". Not all dual-thrust motors are in a tandem arrangement but non-tandem motors function much the same; they just have a different physical layout of fuel.
