Orange Juice (band)
Orange Juice were a Scottish jangle pop band founded in the Glasgow suburb of Bearsden as the Nu-Sonics in 1976. They became Orange Juice in 1979, and took inspiration from contemporary punk bands including Subway Sect, Television, and Buzzcocks but also 1960s acts, most notably the Byrds and the Velvet Underground. Musically, the band brought together styles and genres that often appeared incongruous, for example, country, disco and punk. Though their line-up changed several times, lead singer and guitarist Edwyn Collins was a constant presence and the 'face' of the band. The band released their first singles during 1980 and 1981 on the independent Postcard Records label founded by Alan Horne and Edwyn Collins. Along with labelmates Josef K and Aztec Camera. Bearsden
Bearsden ( ) is a town in East Dunbartonshire, Scotland, on the northwestern fringe of Greater Glasgow, approximately from the Glasgow city centre, city centre. The Roman Empire, Roman Antonine Wall runs through the town, and the remains of a military thermae, bath house can be seen near the town centre. The current settlement began in the 17th century as the kirkton of the parish of New Kilpatrick, and when a railway connection to Glasgow was constructed in 1863, it developed into an affluent suburb of the city. Haircut One Hundred
Haircut One Hundred (also Haircut 100) are a British pop group formed in 1980 in Beckenham, London, by Nick Heyward, Les Nemes and Graham Jones. In 1981 and 1982, the band scored four UK top-10 singles: " Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)", " Love Plus One", " Nobody's Fool", and " Fantastic Day". History Formation and ''Pelican West'' Nick Heyward and Les Nemes had been in several bands together since 1977. They gigged under the names Rugby, Boat Party, and Captain Pennyworth, but did not release any music. Their last band together, Moving England, with Sex Gang Children's Rob Stroud, released one single. Heyward and Nemes moved to London in 1980 where they recruited friend and guitarist Graham Jones. The Bluebells
The Bluebells are a Scottish indie new wave band, active between 1981 and 1986 (later reforming in 1993, 2008–2009, 2011, 2018, 2019 and 2023). Career The Bluebells performed jangly guitar-based pop not dissimilar to their Scottish contemporaries Aztec Camera and Orange Juice. They had three top 40 hits on the UK Singles Chart, all written by guitarist and founder member Bobby Bluebell (real name Robert Hodgens) – " I'm Falling", "Cath", and their biggest success " Young at Heart". The latter was co-written with Siobhan Fahey of Bananarama (originally recorded on the Bananarama album '' Deep Sea Skiving'') and violinist Bobby Valentino, and made it to number 8 on the UK Singles Chart on its original release in 1984. Aztec Camera
Aztec Camera were a Scottish pop/ new wave band founded by Roddy Frame, the group's singer, songwriter and only consistent member. Established in 1980, Aztec Camera released a total of six studio albums: '' High Land, Hard Rain'' (1983), ''Knife'' (1984), ''Love'' (1987), '' Stray'' (1990), '' Dreamland'' (1993) and '' Frestonia'' (1995). Josef K were a Scottish post-punk band, active between 1979 and 1982, who released singles on the Postcard Records label. The band was named after the protagonist of Franz Kafka's novel ''The Trial''. Although they released just one album while together and achieved only moderate success, they have since proved influential on many bands that followed. The Byrds
The Byrds () were an American Rock music, rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1964. The band underwent multiple lineup changes throughout its existence, with frontman Roger McGuinn (known as Jim McGuinn until mid-1967) being the sole consistent member.
