Orange Home, Florida
Orange Home was a community in Florida and is now a neighborhood three miles from Wildwood, Florida. It was a stop on a rail line through the area. Orange Home dates to at least 1886 when it was listed in a Florida state directory as "Eight miles west of Leesburg, on the I. R. branch of the F. R. & N. Co's railroad". At the time it had a store, public school, a commercial school, blacksmiths, and a saw mill. In 1925, a new city was planned in the area. In 1926, the plans included an educational center, an idea originally made by the previous owner of the property, state senator David Hume Baker. The land was acquired by C. Edgar Wood a capitalist from Baltimore with the aim to develop it and the area around Lake Okahumpka and Lake Deaton. Wildwood, Florida
Wildwood is a city in Sumter County, Florida, Sumter County, Florida, United States. The population was 15,730 at the 2020 census. History A post office called Wildwood has been in operation since 1881. The city was named for its remote location in the woods. In April 2015, The Villages, Florida, The Villages petitioned the city of Wildwood with plans to build 785 new homes on Florida State Road 44#County Road 44A (Sumter County), County Road 466A, across from Pinellas Plaza. Wildwood leaders rejected the expansion efforts citing concerns of the city losing its identity when it was to become overwhelmed by The Villages. On April 27, 2015, The Villages formally withdrew their plans for expansion, indicating that the City of Wildwood officials made too many requests that would be a “disservice to our residents and business partners". David Hume Baker
David Hume Baker (October 7, 1841 – June 1, 1917) was a state senator in the US states of Kentucky and Florida. His historic home, which was built between 1886 and 1890, still stands in Wildwood, Florida, and hosts various events. The home was built in what was then the community of Orange Home, Florida. The Baker House was part of a 1,200-acre property. The house stayed in the family for several generations before it was sold to the City of Wildwood in 2012. A historical marker was added at the site of the Baker House in 2019 by the Timucua Chapter of the Colonial Dames of the 17th Century. During the Civil War, Baker served in the Union Army as a member of the 12th Kentucky Cavalry Regiment. He was a state senator in Kentucky from 1873 until 1875. Baker then moved from Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, to Orange Home, Florida. Baker served in the Florida Legislature from 1886 until 1890. Lake Okahumpka is a freshwater lake in Wildwood, Florida, United States. Lake Okahumpka Park is along part of its shoreline. In 1980, the United States Geological Survey reported on the hydrology of Lake Okahumpka and Lake Deaton area. The lake is east of Wildwood on the south side of State Road 44. The lake has been treated for hydrilla. Ring neck ducks have been hunted from its shores.
