Ora, Texas
Ora is a ghost town in Angelina County, Texas, Angelina County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located within the Lufkin, Texas micropolitan area. History A post office was established at Ora in 1884 and remained in operation until 1911. It operated under the name Breaker in 1884 and was changed to Ora ten years later. Ora had a general store, a corn mill, Christianity, Christian and Methodist churches, a blacksmith and a physician in 1896. There were also several sawmills in operation. There were two churches in the community as late as the 1930s. When Sam Rayburn Reservoir was completed in 1960, much of the community was submerged by its creation. Today the same two churches, as well as the old houses, remain, along with a gas station, a storage unit, and a now defunct fire department . Angelina River
The Angelina River is formed by the junction of Barnhardt and Shawnee creeks northwest of Laneville in southwest central Rusk County, Texas. The river flows southeast for and forms the boundaries between Cherokee and Nacogdoches, Angelina and Nacogdoches, and Angelina and San Augustine counties. It passes under US 59 via former Angelina River Bridge. It empties into the Neches River north of Jasper in northwestern Jasper County. The Sam Rayburn Reservoir is on the southern part of the river. Huntington is a city in Angelina County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,025 at the 2020 census. The site is named for Collis Potter Huntington, the chairman of the board of the Southern Pacific Railroad when the town was formed and one of the Big Four. Huntington is known as the "Gateway to Lake Sam Rayburn". Geography Huntington is located in eastern Angelina County at (31.279227, –94.572881). Sam Rayburn Reservoir
Sam Rayburn Reservoir is a reservoir in the United States in Deep East Texas, north of Beaumont. The reservoir is fed by the Angelina River, the major tributary of the Neches River. The Reservoir is upstream of the Big Thicket National Preserve. The reservoir's capacity is , and is the largest lake wholly within the state of Texas. The reservoir is operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth district. History Construction began September 7, 1956, and the reservoir began serving its purpose on March 29, 1965. The main purposes of the reservoir are flood control, hydroelectric power generation, and conservation of water.
