Operation Schlußstein
Operation Schlußstein (Operation Keystone) was a German military operation, which was carried out towards the end of the First World War in the Baltic Sea region and in Karelia with the aim of occupying the Murman Railway. Background After the Bolsheviks' victory in the October Revolution at the end of 1917, the unstable Russian situation caused by the civil war prompted the German Supreme Army Command to take expansive action in the East. Although the Brest-Litovsk peace treaty of spring 1918 seemed to end the war in the East, the civil war situation did not bring peace. The non-Russian peoples had been granted sovereignty by Lenin, but there were conflict in these region, especially in Finland and Ukraine. Meanwhile the Bolsheviks tried to export the revolution and establish socialist regimes in these areas. Murmansk
Murmansk () is a port city and the administrative center of Murmansk Oblast in the far Far North (Russia), northwest part of Russia. Primorsk, Leningrad Oblast
Primorsk (; ; ) is a coastal town in Vyborgsky District of Leningrad Oblast, Russia and is the second largest Russian port on the Baltic, after St. Petersburg. It is located on the Karelian Isthmus, west of St. Petersburg, at the northern coast of the Gulf of Finland, near Beryozovye Islands (; ) which are protected as a sea bird sanctuary. SMS Stralsund
SMS was a light cruiser of the German Kaiserliche Marine. Her class included three other ships: , , and . She was built at the AG Weser shipyard in Bremen from 1910 to December 1912, when she was commissioned into the High Seas Fleet. The ship was armed with a main battery of twelve 10.5 cm SK L/45 naval gun, 10.5 cm SK L/45 guns and had a top speed of . was assigned to the reconnaissance forces of the High Seas Fleet for the majority of her career. She saw significant action in the early years of World War I, including several operations off the British coast and the Battles of Battle of Heligoland Bight (1914), Heligoland Bight and Battle of Dogger Bank (1915), Dogger Bank, in August 1914 and November 1915, respectively.
