Open Top Bus
An open top bus is a bus, usually but not exclusively a double-decker bus, which has been built or modified to operate without a roof. Early buses were constructed without roofs but in more recent times they have only been built for tourist and sightseeing services. Some are made by removing all or part of the roof from a more conventional bus. Use Until the 1920s most, if not all, double-decker buses were constructed with no roof on the upper deck, and were the original "open-toppers". Open-top buses are now primarily used as tour buses for sightseeing in cities, or around rural monuments or areas of special interest. Bishopsteignton - Stagecoach 19992 (LRV992)
Bishopsteignton is a village and civil parish in South Devon, England, between Newton Abbot and Teignmouth, close to the Teign Estuary. The village is on a steep hill, and has a post office and pharmacy and a small, family-run village shop. The village school has about 180 pupils. The electoral ward had a population of 2,570 at the 2011 census. The village has three churches: one Gospel Hall (Plymouth Brethren), one Methodist and one Anglican, St John The Baptist, with a fine Norman doorway that survived Victorian restoration. Open top buses are used in the United Kingdom for sightseeing and seasonal summer services. History The first open top buses in the United Kingdom were regular double deck buses, but these were later replaced by buses with enclosed top decks. One of the first operators to provide open top buses for its seaside routes was Brighton & Hove (bus company), Brighton, Hove & District in 1936. While most operators rebuilt old vehicles for such services, Maidstone & District Motor Services purchased six new Leyland Titan (front-engined double-decker), Leyland Tiran TD5s with open top bodies built by Metro Cammell Weymann, Weymann in 1939. The AEC Routemaster is a Front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, front-engined double-decker bus that was designed by London Transport Executive, London Transport and built by the Associated Equipment Company (AEC) and Park Royal Vehicles. The first prototype was completed in September 1954 and the last one was delivered in 1968. The layout of the vehicle was conventional for the time, with a half-cab, front-mounted engine and open rear platform, although the coach version was fitted with rear platform doors. Forward entrance vehicles with platform doors were also produced as was a unique front-entrance prototype with the engine mounted transversely at the rear. 2009 Attack On The Dutch Royal Family
The 2009 attack on the Dutch royal family occurred on 30th April in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands, when a man drove his car at high speed into a parade which included Queen Beatrix, Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and other members of the Monarchy of the Netherlands, royal family. The attack took place on the Dutch public holiday, national holiday of Koninginnedag (or ''Queen's Day''). The driver deliberately drove through people lining the street watching the parade, resulting in eight (8) deaths, including the attacker, and ten injuries. The car missed the royal family and crashed into a monument at the side of the road. No members of the royal family were harmed. It was the first attack on the Dutch royal family in modern times.
