Open Society Foundations–Armenia (OSFA) () is the Armenian branch of Open Society Foundations (OSF). Open Society Foundations–Armenia was founded in 1997 and is headquartered in Yerevan. The foundation seeks to support local partners working to promote and protect human rights, the rule of law, justice, accountability, and transparency in Armenia. History Open Society Foundations–Armenia began its operations in 1997 shortly following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. The foundation responded with supplying humanitarian aid, equipment, and technology to Armenia's schools, universities, libraries, and healthcare facilities that were struggling to adapt to the new economic pressures. Republic Of Artsakh
Artsakh ( ), officially the Republic of Artsakh or the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh ( ), was a breakaway state in the South Caucasus whose territory was internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan. 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War
The Second Nagorno-Karabakh War was an armed conflict in 2020 that took place in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding occupied territories. It was a major escalation of an unresolved conflict over the region, involving Azerbaijan, Armenia and the self-declared Armenian breakaway state of Artsakh. HIV/AIDS In Armenia
The registration of HIV cases in Armenia started in 1988. In 2010, HIV prevalence was estimated at 0.2% among adults aged 15 to 49. Overall, as of 31 July 2019, 3,583 HIV cases had been registered in the country among citizens of Armenia with 429 new cases of HIV infection registered in 2018. Males constitute a major part (69%) in the total number of HIV cases. Of all the people living with HIV, slightly more than half (51%) was in the age group of 25–39 at the time of HIV diagnosis. The main modes of HIV transmission are through heterosexual contacts (72%) and injecting drug use (20%), followed by male-to-male sex, accounting for 4.4% of all registered cases. COVID-19 Pandemic In Armenia
The COVID-19 pandemic in Armenia was a part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 () caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (). The virus was confirmed to have reached Armenia on 1 March 2020 when its first case was reported. It has spread to all of the regions ( marz) of Armenia and has caused 4,400 deaths (not including 1,077 more deaths as a result of "other reasons"). Armenia has suspended visa-free travel for Chinese citizens since 1 February, shortly after it implemented a 90-day visa-free regime on 19 January. Citizens of Iran can no longer receive a visa on arrival either. Yerevan State University
Yerevan State University (YSU; , , ), also simply University of Yerevan, is the oldest continuously operating public university in Armenia. Founded in 1919, it is the largest university in the country. It is thus informally known as Armenia's "mother university" (, ). Of its 3,150 employees, 1,190 comprise the teaching staff, which includes 25 academicians, 130 professors, 700 docents (associate professors), and 360 assistant lecturers.
