On The Beach (novel)

As the radiation approaches, each person deals with impending death differently. Shute's initial story was published as a four-part series, ''The Last Days on Earth'', in the London weekly periodical '' Sunday Graphic'', in April 1957. For the novel, Shute expanded the storyline. The story has been adapted twice as a film (in 1959 and 2000) and once as a BBC Radio broadcast in 2008. Title The phrase "on the beach" is a Royal Navy term that indicates retirement from service. The title also refers to T. S. Eliot's poem '' The Hollow Men,'' which includes the lines: Printings of the novel, including the first 1957 edition by William ...

''The Contingency Plan'' is the overall title of a pair of plays by the British playwright Steve Waters that opened at the Bush Theatre on 22 April 2009. The two full-length plays are ''On the Beach'' and ''Resilience''. They are both set in the United Kingdom in the near future. Both involve the same couple, Will Paxton and Sarika Chatterjee. Paxton is a scientist who has returned from research in Antarctica with a new understanding of glacial melting due to climate change and the corresponding possibilities of a rise in sea levels and of coastal flooding. Michael Billington wrote of the pair of plays that their "flaws pale beside Waters' massive achievement which is to have made the most important issue of our times into engrossing theatre." In the original performances Will was played by Geoffrey Streatfeild and Sarika by Stephanie Street. On The Beach (Neil Young Album)
''On the Beach'' is the fifth studio album by Canadian-American musician Neil Young, released by Reprise Records in July 1974. It is the second of the so-called "Ditch Trilogy" that Young recorded following the massive success of 1972's ''Harvest'', and reveals the artist grappling with feelings of over-exposure, alienation and melancholy. Background Looking back on the album for the liner notes to the ''Decade'' box set, Young wrote of " Heart of Gold": "This song put me in the middle of the road. Traveling there soon became a bore, so I headed for the ditch. A rougher ride but I saw more interesting people there." Recorded after (but released before) '' Tonight's the Night'', ''On the Beach'' shares some of that album's bleakness and crude production — which came as a shock to fans and critics alike, as this was the long-awaited studio follow-up to the commercially and critically successful ''Harvest''. It hinted towards a more subtle outlook, particularly on the opening trac ...
