Omar Alfredo Rodríguez-López (born September 1, 1975) is a Puerto Rican guitarist, songwriter, record producer and filmmaker. He has formed or played in several bands, including The Mars Volta, At the Drive-In, Antemasque, and Bosnian Rainbows. He was the bassist for the dub band De Facto. He has embarked on a solo career, both in studio and in concert, frequently described as experimental, avant-garde, or progressive. He has also collaborated with numerous artists, such as Damo Suzuki, John Frusciante, El-P, Mon Laferte and Calle 13. Early life Rodríguez-López was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in El Paso, Texas, and spent some of his childhood in South Carolina. He began playing the bass at age 12, but then switched to guitar at 15 because he "needed more strings". The Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group (often referred to by its acronym ORLG) is an American experimental rock band, and the main side project of Omar Rodríguez-López. El Grupo Nuevo de Omar Rodriguez Lopez was a band consisting of Omar Rodriguez Lopez (guitar), Cedric Bixler-Zavala (vocals), Juan Alderete de la Peña (bass guitar), Jonathan Hischke (synth bass) and Zach Hill (drums). History Originally this side-project of Omar Rodriguez Lopez's was simply a collaboration with Hella drummer Zach Hill, but eventually Rodriguez Lopez formed an entire band, adding The Mars Volta bandmates and frequent collaborators — Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Juan Alderete de la Peña — as well as Hill's Hella colleague Jonathan Hischke to the lineup. ''Omar Rodriguez'' is the second studio album by The Mars Volta guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López and the first in the "Amsterdam series" (written and recorded in the city in early June 2005). Most of the overdubs were done on the road in August 2005 (during The Mars Volta North American tour) and the album was mixed in September. Gold Standard Laboratories began offering a limited edition vinyl picture disc of this release for mail order in December 2006. The Omar Rodriguez-Lopez Quintet, which formed in unison with the release of this record, toured Europe in November 2005 in support of this new release. Joining then on stage for their November 14, 2005 performance in Cologne, Germany was Damo Suzuki, for the song " Please Heat This Eventually" which would resurface on the next two releases from the group. The record was digitally released on April 30, 2010. It is the twentieth release by Omar, and their second collaboration following 2005's "0=2" vinyl single, which appears on this record along with its b-side, "0". These two tracks have been available digitally since October 3, 2006. This album was a free download with the option to donate for a period of time. All money raised has gone to "Keep Music in Schools". The album can now be downloaded for $3.99. In December 2010, the album was released on CD in Japan through Sleepwell Records and enjoyed success, ending up on Amazon Japan's bestseller list as #2 in the Music > Alternative Rock and #22 in Music > Rock section.
