Omar Rodríguez-López is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, actor and director, who is best known for his roles as band leader of The Mars Volta and guitarist for At the Drive-In. He is also the former bassist of the dub outfit De Facto, punk band Le Butcherettes (for which he also serves as producer), and finally, an active member of Bosnian Rainbows, Antemasque, and Crystal Fairy (band). Omar has released an eclectic catalogue of music as a solo musician and has collaborated with a diverse range of artists and bands, such as El-P, Faust, John Frusciante, Lydia Lunch, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Damo Suzuki. Omar Rodríguez-López
Omar Alfredo Rodríguez-López (born September 1, 1975) is a Puerto Rican guitarist, songwriter, record producer and filmmaker. He has formed or played in several bands, including The Mars Volta, At the Drive-In, Antemasque, and Bosnian Rainbows. He was the bassist for the dub band De Facto. He has embarked on a solo career, both in studio and in concert, frequently described as experimental, avant-garde, or progressive. He has also collaborated with numerous artists, such as Damo Suzuki, John Frusciante, El-P, Mon Laferte and Calle 13. Early life Rodríguez-López was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in El Paso, Texas, and spent some of his childhood in South Carolina. He began playing the bass at age 12, but then switched to guitar at 15 because he "needed more strings". ''Se Dice Bisonte, No Búfalo'' (''It's Called Bison, Not Buffalo'') is the third studio album by Omar Rodríguez-López and the second in the "Amsterdam series". It was written and recorded in 2005 in California and Amsterdam, and was released May 29, 2007, by Gold Standard Labs on both vinyl and CD. A limited edition, brown marble vinyl was also available. 750 were made to fulfill pre-orders through April 30. ''Omar Rodriguez'' is the second studio album by The Mars Volta guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López and the first in the "Amsterdam series" (written and recorded in the city in early June 2005). Most of the overdubs were done on the road in August 2005 (during The Mars Volta North American tour) and the album was mixed in September. Gold Standard Laboratories began offering a limited edition vinyl picture disc of this release for mail order in December 2006. The Omar Rodriguez-Lopez Quintet, which formed in unison with the release of this record, toured Europe in November 2005 in support of this new release. Joining then on stage for their November 14, 2005 performance in Cologne, Germany was Damo Suzuki, for the song " Please Heat This Eventually" which would resurface on the next two releases from the group.
