Olympique Lyonnais–AS Saint-Étienne Rivalry
The Olympique Lyonnais–AS Saint-Étienne rivalry, is a football rivalry between French clubs Olympique Lyonnais and AS Saint-Étienne, with matches between them referred to as the Derby rhônalpin or simply Le Derby. Both clubs are located in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The term Derby du Rhône is sometimes mistakenly used by French media, despite the city of Saint-Étienne not being located along the Rhône River nor in the Rhône département. Background The two clubs first met in 1951 and, due to the clubs' close proximity, being separated by only , a hotly contested rivalry developed. Aimé Étienne Jacquet (born 27 November 1941) is a French former professional Association football, football player and Manager (association football), manager. He coached the France national football team, France national team that won the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, the country's first title. Biography Jacquet was born in Sail-sous-Couzan, Loire. He began his career as an amateur player for his local club, US Couzan, while working in a factory. Scouted by AS Saint-Étienne, Saint-Étienne, he joined ''Les Verts'' in 1960. One of the most successful clubs of the time, Saint-Étienne, won an impressive five Ligue 1, league titles and three Coupe de France, French Cups in his 11 years with the club. The Coupe de la Ligue (), known outside France as the French League Cup, was a knockout cup competition in French football organized by the Ligue de Football Professionnel.
