Luna Leederville (formerly ''New Oxford Theatre'', ''Nickelodeon'', Olympia, Star Theatre and Luna Cinema) is a cinema complex located at the corner of Oxford and Vincent Street, North Perth, Vincent streets in Leederville, Western Australia, Leederville, a suburb of Perth, Western Australia. History The New Oxford Theatre was designed by architect Samuel B. Rosenthal and constructed by Allwood. Rosenthal was a significant architect in Western Australia in the interwar period, known primarily for his cinema designs. The New Oxford Theatre was opened in March 1927 by the Minister for Works, Alex C. McCallum, before a capacity audience of 1,286. The opening programme included vaudeville, music by the New Oxford Orchestra, a short play, some comedy, and a special appearance by Beryl Mills, the first Miss Australia. The Regal Theatre is a fine Art Deco theatre located in the Perth suburb of Subiaco in Western Australia. It was built in 1937, and officially opened on 27 April 1938. The venue was built by grandparents of playwright Dorothy Hewett. Named for King George VI who ascended to the throne during its construction, the theatre was originally for films only, but in 1977 it was converted into a live theatre. it is one of the few remaining theatres in Perth. Como Theatre and Revival House Como previously known as Cygnet Cinema, is located at 16 Preston Street, Como, Western Australia. It was the first purpose built sound cinema in the suburbs immediately south of the city in the inter-war period. The Cygnet Cinema opened in 1938 and was built by local identity and film entrepreneur James Stiles. It is an excellent example of the art deco style of architect William Leighton and is included on the State Register of Heritage Places. The Astor Theatre is located at 659 Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley, Western Australia. It comprises a single, two and three-storey masonry inter-war Art Deco style theatre and retail building. History The building was originally known as the Lyceum Theatre and was designed by David McClure, and built by Simon Alexander, whose family owned the premises.
