Old West Church (Calais, Vermont)
Old West Church is a historic Church (building), church on Old West Road in the Kents Corner Historic District, Kents Corner area of Calais, Vermont, Calais, Vermont. Built 1823–25, it is a little-altered example of an early 19th-century rural Vermont church. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Description and history The Old West Church stands in a rural area of Calais, south of the crossroads village of Kents Corner, on the west side of Old West Road. It is a tall single-story wood-frame structure, with a gabled roof, clapboarded exterior, and stone foundation. A three-stage tower rises above the front facade, with a square first stage housing the belfry, and two octagonal stages of decreasing size. The main facade has a bank of three similar entrances, each flanked by pilasters, and all set under a common entablature and cornice. Calais, Vermont
Calais is a town in Washington County, Vermont, United States. The population was 1,661 at the 2020 census. Calais contains the unincorporated communities of Adamant, East Calais, North Calais, Kent's Corner, Maple Corner and Pekin. History Colonel Jacob Davis named Calais after the French port city of the same name, during a time of general enthusiasm for things French as a result of France's aid during the American Revolution. The Wheelocks and Parkers were the first families to settle the town, in the latter part of the 18th century. In the early and mid 19th century, the Vermont wool industry spawned sheep pastures in the town. Photographs of the time show a heavily de-forested Calais. Like many small Vermont towns, Calais was devastated by the Civil War. Volunteers from Calais flocked to the Union cause, most serving in the Army's volunteer regiments. Kents Corner Historic District
The Kents Corner Historic District encompasses a well-preserved 19th-century crossroads hamlet in Calais, Vermont. Centered on the junction of Kent Hill Road, Old West Church Road, and Robinson Cemetery Road, it developed as a stagecoach stop with a small industrial presence. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and substantially enlarged in 2006. Description and history The Kents Corner area of Calais was settled in the late 1780s by members of the Wheelock family, and the area that is now called Kents Corner was where Remember Kent built his first log cabin (now incorporated into a nearby house) in 1797. The main roads (Kent Hill Road running east–west and Old West Church Road/Robinson Cemetery Road running north–south) were laid out in the early 20th century, crossing on Kent's property. Box Pew
A box pew is a type of church pew that is encased in panelling and was prevalent in England and other Protestant countries from the 16th to early 19th centuries. History in England Before the rise of Protestantism, seating was not customary in churches and only accorded to the lord of the manor, civic dignitaries and finally churchwardens. After 1569 stools and seating were installed in Protestant churches primarily because the congregation were expected to listen to sermons, and various types of seating were introduced including the box pew.
