Old Perry County Courthouse, also known as Rome Schoolhouse, is a historic courthouse located in Tobin Township, Perry County, Indiana. The building is located near the center of the community of Rome, Indiana. It was built in 1818, and is a two-story, square brick building with a hipped roof topped by a central cupola. Tobin Township, Perry County, Indiana
Tobin Township is one of seven townships in Perry County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 768 and it contained 418 housing units. History Several members of the Tobin family were among the pioneer settlers who arrived to Tobin Township in the 1810s. The crash of Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 710, which killed 63 people on March 17, 1960 occurred in Tobin Township. The Old Perry County Courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. Perry County is a county located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Indiana. As of 2010, the population was 19,338. The county seat is Tell City. It is the hilliest county as well as one of the most forested counties in Indiana as it features more than of Hoosier National Forest. The Ohio River Scenic Byway along Indiana State Road 66 runs along the southern border of the county while Interstate 64 traverses the northern portion of the county. Connecting the two is Indiana State Road 37. The county features three incorporated communities: Tell City (2009 population 7,473), Cannelton (2009 population 1,130) and Troy (2009 population 379). Rome is an unincorporated community along the Ohio River in southeastern Tobin Township, Perry County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The community lies across the river from Stephensport, Kentucky and just off Indiana State Road 66 approximately thirteen miles east of Tell City, the county seat of Perry County. The name was changed to Franklin before finally settling on Rome in 1819. A post office was established at Rome that year, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 2008.
