Old Market Hall, Helsinki
The Old Market Hall (; ) is the oldest market hall in Helsinki, Finland. It is located along the Eteläranta street near the Helsinki Market Square in the Kaartinkaupunki district. By 2013, the hall had also become a popular tourist attraction. History The building was designed by Gustaf Nyström and the market hall began operations in 1889. The building technology of the market hall was last renovated between 2012 and 2014, when the hall was closed for a year and a half. Service The market center has a total of about 20 different vendors and cafés, whose product selection consists mostly of food. Among them is one of the smallest Alko stores in Finland. Alko
Alko Inc is the national alcoholic beverage retailing monopoly in Finland. It is the only store in the country which retails beer over 8% ABV, wine (except in vineyards) and spirits. Alcoholic beverages are also sold in licensed restaurants and bars but only for consumption on the premises. Alko is required by law to sell drinks with lower alcohol content than 8% and non-alcoholic alternatives, but in practice carries a very limited stock of low alcohol beer, cider and non-alcoholic drinks and others as supermarkets are allowed to sell those at a substantially lower price. A market house or market hall is a covered space historically used as a marketplace to exchange goods and services such as provisions or livestock, sometimes combined with spaces for public or civic functions on the upper floors and often with a jail or lockup in the cellar or basement floor. Market houses usually included an arcade to protect traders and their goods from the elements while maintaining private access to most of the building. After this style of market building developed in British market towns, it spread to colonial territories of Great Britain, including Ireland and New England in America. Hietalahti Market Hall
The Hietalahti market hall is an old market hall located near the Hietalahdentori market square in Helsinki, Finland, hosting several restaurants and cafés. The market hall acts as concentration for restaurants and cafés, offering Japanese, Portuguese, Italian, French and Middle Eastern cuisine both at lunchtime and in the evening. Although the building designed by architect Selim A. Lindqvist in 1903 was believed to originally have served as a Russian cavalry barracks, it has been a market hall since the beginning. Of the market halls in the city centre, it was known for its grocery offerings for a long time, but as the Hietalahdentori market square next to it started gaining publicity about illegal trade of alcoholic beverages and tobacco by foreign tourists, this had a negative effect on the market hall's activity.
