Old Laurel High School
Old Laurel High School is a historic former school building on Montgomery Street in Laurel, Maryland. Built in 1899, it was the original Laurel High School, the oldest high school in Prince George's County. Laurel High School was founded in 1899 with an enrollment of 59 students and four teachers. The 1900 graduating class was all female. The cupola on top was used during World War II as a Civil Defense aircraft spotting station for identifying enemy aircraft. In 1965, the high school moved to a larger building on Cherry Lane. The last graduating class at the original location held a 50th reunion in 2015. After the high school left, the building was owned by the county and named the Edward Phelps Community Center. Edwards Phelps was mayor of Laurel from 1895 to 1902. Laurel, Maryland
Laurel is a city in Maryland, United States, located midway between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore on the banks of the Patuxent River, in northern Prince George's County. Its population was 30,060 at the 2020 census. Founded as a mill town in the early 19th century, Laurel expanded local industry and was later able to become an early commuter town for Washington and Baltimore workers following the arrival of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1835. Largely residential today, the city maintains a historic district centered on its Main Street. Edward Phelps (mayor)
Edward Phelps (January 5, 1861 – May 12, 1931), son of Edward J. Phelps, was a seven-term mayor of Laurel, Maryland, from 1895 to 1902. He brought to Laurel "electric lights, water works, improved streets, brick pavements, nelectric railroad between Laurel and Washington, improved train service, free express delivery, telephone exchange system, three steel bridges over the Patuxent River and night robe factory". As of 1908, the night robe factory was run by E. Rosenfeld & Co. Life and family Phelps was born in Laurel on January 5, 1861. He married Sevilla Sewall, and they had eleven children, two of whom died in infancy – Mable and Robert. His four surviving daughters were Eva Dean (married George Dean), Edna Phelps, Maude Beall (married Norris Beall), and Lillian Phelps, and his five surviving sons were Harry S., Arthur P., Charles E., Alan, and William.
