Oklahoma! (film)
''Oklahoma!'' is a 1955 American musical film based on the Oklahoma!, 1943 musical of the same name by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, which in turn was based on the 1931 Play (theatre), play ''Green Grow the Lilacs (play), Green Grow the Lilacs'' written by Lynn Riggs. It stars Gordon MacRae, Shirley Jones (in her film debut), Rod Steiger, Charlotte Greenwood, Gloria Grahame, Gene Nelson, James Whitmore, and Eddie Albert. The production was the only musical directed by Fred Zinnemann. ''Oklahoma!'' was the first feature film photographed in the Todd-AO 70 mm film, 70 mm widescreen process (and was simultaneously filmed in CinemaScope 35mm). Set in Oklahoma Territory shortly after the turn of the 20th century, it tells the story of farm girl Laurey Williams (Jones) and her courtship by two rival suitors, cowboy Curly McLain (MacRae) and the sinister and frightening farmhand Jud Fry (Steiger). Alfred Zinnemann (April 29, 1907 – March 14, 1997) was an American film director and producer. He won four Academy Awards for directing and producing films in various genres, including thriller film, thrillers, western (genre), westerns, film noir and drama, play adaptations. He began his career in Europe before emigrating to the US, where he specialized in Short film, shorts before making 25 feature films during his 50-year career. Robert Lee Surtees A.S.C. (August 9, 1906 – January 5, 1985) was an American cinematographer who won three Academy Awards for the films ''King Solomon's Mines'', '' The Bad and the Beautiful'' and the 1959 version of '' Ben-Hur''. 70 mm film (or 65 mm film) is a wide high-resolution film gauge for motion picture photography, with a negative area nearly 3.5 times as large as the standard 35 mm motion picture film format. As used in cameras, the film is wide. For projection, the original 65 mm film is printed on film. The additional 5 mm contains the four magnetic stripes, holding six tracks of stereophonic sound. Although later 70 mm prints use digital sound encoding (specifically the DTS format), the vast majority of existing and surviving 70 mm prints pre-date this technology. Each frame is five perforations tall (i.e., 23.8125 mm or 15/16 inches tall), with an image aspect ratio of 2.2:1. Oscar Hammerstein II
Oscar Greeley Clendenning Hammerstein II (; July 12, 1895 – August 23, 1960) was an American lyricist, librettist, theatrical producer, and director in musical theater for nearly 40 years. He won eight Tony Awards and two Academy Awards for Best Original Song. Many of his songs are standard repertoire for vocalists and jazz musicians. He co-wrote 850 songs. In the motion picture industry, a wide release (short for nationwide release) is a film playing at the same time at cinemas in most markets across a country. This is in contrast to the formerly common practice of a roadshow theatrical release in which a film opens at a few cinemas in key cities before circulating among cinemas around a country, or a limited release in which a film is booked at fewer cinemas (such as " art house" venues) in larger cities in anticipation of lesser commercial appeal. CinemaScope is an anamorphic format, anamorphic lens series used, from 1953 to 1967, and less often later, for shooting widescreen films that, crucially, could be screened in theatres using existing equipment, albeit with a lens adapter. Its creation in 1953 by Spyros Skouras, Spyros P. A roadshow theatrical release or reserved-seat engagement is the practice of opening a film in a limited number of theaters in major cities for a specific period of time before the wide release of the film. Roadshows would generally mimic a live theatre production, with an upscale atmosphere, as well as somewhat higher prices than during a wide release. They were commonly used to promote major films from the 1920s–60s and build excitement. Roadshows had a number of features that distinguished them from normal releases. An intermission was used between the two "acts" of the film, with the first act usually somewhat longer than the second.
