Okeechobee County () is a county located in the Florida Heartland region of the state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 39,644. The county seat is Okeechobee. History Okeechobee County was incorporated in 1917. It was named for Lake Okeechobee, which was itself named for the Seminole Indian words ''okee'' (water) and ''chobee'' (big). Okeechobee ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Okeechobee County, Florida, United States. As of the 2020 US census, the city's population was 5,254. The Lake Okeechobee area was severely damaged in the 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane, the first recorded Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Scale, Category 5 hurricane in the North Atlantic. This was one of the deadliest hurricanes ever to strike the US. Okeechobee is served by the Okeechobee County Airport. Okeechobee County Airport
Okeechobee County Airport is a general aviation airport located 3 mi (4.82 km) northwest of Okeechobee, in unincorporated Okeechobee County, Florida. - Find the icon of the aircraft. History The airport was opened in April 1940 as Conners Field. It was leased by the United States Army Air Corps in 1941 as an auxiliary training field, and used by the Hendricks Army Airfield B-17 Flying Fortress training school near Sebring during World War II. The runways and other facilities were improved by the Army, and the airport was used for training touch-and-go landings landings and emergencies. No permanent military units or personnel were assigned. With the end of the war in 1945, the site was returned for civil use. Since then, Okeechobee has been operated as a general aviation airport. Florida National Scenic Trail
The Florida Trail is one of eleven National Scenic Trails in the United States, created by the National Trails System Act of 1968 (Public Law 90-543). It runs , from Big Cypress National Preserve (between Miami and Naples, along the Tamiami Trail) to Fort Pickens at Gulf Islands National Seashore, Pensacola Beach. Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail
The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail (LOST) is a 109-mile multi-use path around Lake Okeechobee, the seventh largest lake in the United States and the largest in the state of Florida. The trail began as the Okeechobee Segment of the Florida National Scenic Trail (FNST), a 1,000 mile trail that runs from Miami to Pensacola. The USDA and National Forest Service dedicated the Okeechobee Segment as part of the FNST in 1993. Most of the trail is atop the 35-feet tall Herbert Hoover Dike. The trail crosses five counties, Hendry, Glades, Okeechobee, Martin and Palm Beach. Many stretches run along state and county highways, including Florida State Road 78.
