Oh Johnny, How You Can Love
''Oh Johnny, How You Can Love'' is a 1940 American film directed by Charles Lamont and starring Tom Brown and Peggy Moran. It was an early appearance of Laird Cregar. The film cost $100,000. Plot Kelly Archer, an heiress trying to escape her controlling father and elope with an archeologist, runs into the truck of traveling salesman Johnny Sandham. She hitches a ride with Johnny. A bank robber known as The Weasel commandeers the truck and takes the two hostage. That night, stopping to have the truck's brakes fixed, Johnny dupes the Weasel into helping him win over Kelly: Johnny pretends to be gangster "Jersey Joe", and says they should kidnap Kelly for ransom. Kelly overhears their plan, and helps innkeeper Thistlebottom subdue both men. Kelly's father arrives to take his daughter home, but she rides off with Johnny. Charles Lamont
Charles Lamont (May 5, 1895 – September 11, 1993) was an American filmmaker, known for directing over 200 titles and producing and writing many others. He directed nine Abbott and Costello comedies and many Ma and Pa Kettle films. Biography Lamont was born in San Francisco. Lamont came from a family of actors, being the fourth generation to be an actor. He appeared onstage while a teenager and started appearing in films from 1919. He worked as a Theatrical property, prop man before becoming assistant director. Lamont started directing comedy shorts in 1922, including for Mack Sennett and Al Christie. Some of Lamont's earliest directorial jobs were silent short-subject comedies for Educational Pictures. One of the studio's popular series was ''Juvenile Comedies'', featuring the child actor Malcolm "Big Boy" Sebastian. Samuel Laird Cregar (known professionally as Laird Cregar, July 28, 1913December 9, 1944) was an American stage and film actor. Cregar was best known for his villainous performances in films such as '' I Wake Up Screaming'' (1941), ''This Gun For Hire'' (1942) and '' The Lodger'' (1944). Cregar's screen career began in 1940 with small uncredited roles in films. By 1941, he had signed a film contract with 20th Century Fox. Cregar quickly rose to stardom, appearing in a variety of genres from film noir to screwball comedy to horror movies. He was a popular actor at the time of his death in 1944 at age 31, a result of complications from binge dieting undertaken to suit him for leading man roles.
