Ogallah is an unincorporated community in Trego County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the community and nearby areas was 28. It is located approximately 7 miles east of WaKeeney. History Ogallah was named for the Oglala Lakota tribe. The post office was established January 27, 1879. Geography Climate The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Ogallah has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. Cedar Bluff State Park
Cedar Bluff State Park is a public recreation area located southeast of WaKeeney and southwest of Ellis in Trego County, Kansas, United States. The state park is divided into two areas, comprising , straddling the Cedar Bluff Reservoir. The Bluffton Area— on the north shore—is the most developed and receives extensive use. The Page Creek Area— on the south shore—offers primitive camping as well as 36 utility sites. West of the Page Creek Area are the juniper-lined, limestone bluffs from which the reservoir's name was derived (junipers were often misidentified as "cedars" by early settlers). Cedar Bluff Reservoir
Cedar Bluff Reservoir is a reservoir in Trego County, Kansas, United States. Built and managed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for irrigation and area water supply, it is also used for flood control and recreation. Cedar Bluff State Park is located on its shore. History The severe drought in western Kansas during the 1930s created demand for irrigation projects and new sources for municipal water supplies. In response, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation began investigating the Smoky Hill River basin in 1941 to determine what would be feasible, but the outbreak of World War II halted the effort. The Flood Control Act of 1944 authorized the creation of Cedar Bluff Reservoir as part of the Pick-Sloan Missouri Basin Program, and investigations resumed in 1945. WaKeeney, Kansas
WaKeeney is a city in and the county seat of Trego County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 1,799. History James Keeney, a land speculator in Chicago, purchased land at the site of modern-day WaKeeney from the Kansas Pacific Railway in 1877. He and business partner Albert Warren formed Warren, Keeney, & Co., surveyed and plotted the site in 1878, and established a colony there in 1879. They named the colony WaKeeney, a portmanteau of their surnames, and billed it as "The Queen City of the High Plains", advertising and holding celebrations to attract settlers. The colony grew rapidly, but crop failures drove settlers to leave in 1880 as quickly as they had come. By 1882, all that was left were "five poorly patronized retail stores".
