Oceania Rugby Women's Championship is an international women's rugby union competition contested by women's national teams from Oceania. Fiji women's national rugby union team, Fiji are the current Champions and have won the most titles with five. History The Oceania Rugby Women's Championship was introduced in 2016, and since its inception, also serves as a Rugby World Cup (women's), Rugby World Cup and WXV qualification tournament. Before the establishment of the Championship there were few international fixtures for women's rugby in the region which hindered its progress. Matches were restricted to occasional test matches as part of the Rugby World Cup qualification process. It was established to provide more regular and consistent international competitions for the region. 2016 Oceania Rugby Women's Championship
The 2016 Oceania Rugby Women's Championship was the inaugural Oceania Rugby Women's Championship, Oceania Championship for women's rugby in the region. It was held in Suva on November 5. It was part of the 2017 Women's Rugby World Cup qualifying, 2017 Rugby World Cup qualifying process. Teams Three teams initially nominated for the tournament were Fiji women's national rugby union team, Fiji, Papua New Guinea women's national rugby union team, Papua New Guinea and Samoa women's national rugby union team, Samoa. Women's International Rugby
Women's international rugby union has a history dating back to the late 19th century. It was not until 1982 that the first international fixture ( test match) took place. The match was organised in connection with the Dutch Rugby Union's 50th anniversary: as part of the celebrations, on 13 June 1982, the France national women's team played the Netherlands in Utrecht, with France winning 4–0. This match has since been recognised as the first-ever women's international test match. Official recognition of women's internationals was not immediate, as almost all women's rugby was originally organised outside of the control of either national unions or World Rugby for many years. As a result, no internationally agreed list of rugby internationals exists; even in the men's game, World Rugby does not decide which matches are test matches, leaving such decisions up to participating unions. Women's Pacific Tri-Nations
The Women's Pacific Tri-Nations tournament was contested in April 2006 at the Teufaiva Park in Nuku’alofa, Tonga. It was the only time the tournament was held. Samoa had been playing international rugby since 2000, and competed in two World Cups. Fiji and Tonga were making their international debut in women's fifteens. Although a Samoan victory was hardly unexpected, Fiji pushed them close. Overall the tournament was a success. Sigatoka
Sigatoka (, ) is a town in Fiji. It is on the island of Viti Levu at the mouth of the Sigatoka River, for which it is named, some 61 kilometres from Nadi. 2025 Oceania Rugby Women's Championship
The 2025 Oceania Rugby Women's Championship is the seventh edition of the tournament and will be held at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, Fiji from 6 to 14 June 2025. Fiji last hosted the event in 2019. Fiji, Samoa and Tonga will be competing in this year's tournament. Papua New Guinea will not be participating due to the suspension of Rugby PNG from Oceania Rugby in September 2024. Fiji successfully defended their title after beating Samoa 24–20 in the final match. The 2024 Oceania Rugby Women's Championship is the tournament's sixth edition and will be held in Brisbane, Queensland from 24 May to 2 June. The winner qualifies directly for the 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup and for the 2024 WXV 3, whereas the runner-up qualifies only for WXV 3. 2023 Oceania Rugby Women's Championship
The 2023 Oceania Rugby Women's Championship was the fifth edition of the Oceania Rugby Women's Championship. The competition was held at Bond University in Gold Coast, Queensland between 26 May and 4 June. The 2023 competition saw teams compete for two spots in World Rugby's inaugural WXV competition that will commence later in the year. The 2018 Oceania Rugby Women's Championship was the second edition of the competition. It was held in Churchill Park, Lautoka, Fiji from 16 to 24 November.
