Héctor Elpidio Acosta Restituyo (born May 23, 1967), better known as Héctor Acosta "El Torito" (Héctor Acosta "The Little Bull") or simply Héctor Acosta, is a Merengue music, Merengue and Bachata (music), bachata singer, and politician from the Dominican Republic. In 2020 Dominican Republic general election, 2020, he was elected senator representing the Monseñor Nouel Province before the Senate of the Dominican Republic; he was 2024 Dominican Republic general election, reelected in 2024. Acosta was the lead singer for the Dominican band Los Toros Band (The Bull Band). They were mostly a merengue band who in the late 1990s started to perform bachata songs which would gain huge success. Merengue is a type of music and Merengue (dance), dance originating in present-day Dominican Republic which has become a very popular genre throughout Latin America, and also in several major cities in the United States with Latino communities. Merengue was inscribed on November 30, 2016, in the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO. Merengue was developed in the middle of the 1800s, originally played with European stringed instruments (bandurria and guitar).
