''Oar On, Penelope!'' is the sixteenth studio album by American pop rock band The Minus 5. It was released on May 30, 2025, through Yep Roc Records, in CD, LP and digital formats. Background Produced by Scott McCaughey and mixed by Ed Stasium, ''Oar On, Penelope!'', was preceded by ''Calling Cortez'' in 2023 and was noted as a college rock album. It consists of twelve tracks ranging between one and three minutes each, with a total runtime of approximately thirty-seven minutes. The album's lead single, "Words & Birds", was released on February 10, 2025. Reception The album was described by AllMusic as "the sort of spontaneously joyous record that reminds us it's a great thing he's still with us and making music." The Minus 5
The Minus 5 is an American pop rock band headed by musician Scott McCaughey of Young Fresh Fellows, often in partnership with R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck. Band history McCaughey formed the band in 1993 as a side project with Buck, Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow of The Posies. Buck had moved to the Seattle area in 1992; the other principals were longtime fixtures of the Seattle music scene. The four musicians had numerous personal and professional connections: both the Posies and McCaughey's The Young Fresh Fellows had recorded at Conrad Uno's Egg Studios and released albums on Uno's PopLlama Records label. The Young Fresh Fellows and The Posies were fixtures of Seattle's Crocodile Cafe, owned and managed by Buck's then-girlfriend (later wife) Stephanie Dorgan. Patterson Hood
Patterson David Hood (born March 24, 1964) is an American singer-songwriter and co-founder of the band Drive-By Truckers. Early life Hood was born in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, the son of Jan Patterson Adams and David Hood, the longtime bassist of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. He has a younger sister, Lilla Hood. His parents married young, and divorced when he was in college. His mother later remarried. Hood wrote the song "18 Wheels of Love" about their relationship. Hood began writing songs at the age of eight, and by the time he was 14 he was playing guitar in a local rock band. He went college at the University of North Alabama, where he formed the band Adam's House Cat in 1985 with his friend Mike Cooley, and the group won '' Musician Magazines Best Unsigned Band competition three years later. Tweedy is an American rock band composed of Jeff Tweedy, from the group Wilco, and his son, Spencer. The duo has released one album, ''Sukierae,'' in 2014. The elder Tweedy had planned ''Sukierae'' to be a solo record, but kept Spencer involved after playing together on early sessions. The group's album name references Susie, Jeff's wife and Spencer's mother, who was diagnosed with cancer during the composition process. Peter Buck
Peter Lawrence Buck (born December 6, 1956) is an American musician and songwriter. He was a co-founder and the lead guitarist of the alternative rock band R.E.M.; he played the banjo and mandolin on several R.E.M. songs. Throughout his career with R.E.M. (1980–2011), as well as during his subsequent solo career, Buck has been at various times a member of numerous side project groups. Deborah Mary Peterson (born on August 22, 1961) is an American musician and the drummer of the band The Bangles.
