Oakland is one of five primary historic neighborhoods of the city of Taunton, Massachusetts, United States. Although these neighborhoods are not census-designated areas, they are municipally designated populated regions of the city. Location Oakland Village is located in the northwestern section of the City of Taunton. The village center is located at the intersection of Tremont Street, Worcester Street and North Walker Street. The Oakland neighborhood is bordered on the east by the neighborhood of North Taunton and Whittenton and the Oakland neighborhood is bordered on the west by the neighborhood of Westville. The Oakland neighborhood is bordered on the north west by the communities of Norton, Massachusetts. The main roadway through the neighborhood of Oakland is Tremont Street which was formerly called the Bristol Path. The road was a major stage route to what is today Bristol Rhode Island. Taunton is a city in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States. It is the seat of Bristol County. Taunton is situated on the Taunton River which winds its way through the city on its way to Mount Hope Bay, to the south. At the 2020 census, the city had a population of 59,408. Shaunna O'Connell is the mayor of Taunton. Founded in 1637 by members of the Plymouth Colony, Taunton is one of the oldest towns in the United States. Route 140 is a north—south state highway which passes through Bristol, Norfolk and Worcester counties in Massachusetts. The highway follows a southeast-northwest trajectory, running from U.S. Route 6 (US 6) in New Bedford just north of Buzzards Bay northwest to an intersection with Route 12 in Winchendon, a few miles south of the border with New Hampshire. The Greater Attleboro Taunton Regional Transit Authority (GATRA) oversees and coordinates public and medical transportation in the areas of Attleboro and Taunton, Massachusetts and 24 nearby areas.
