This is a list of Ontario Hockey Association Junior A seasons since the inception of modern Junior A hockey in 1970. History In 1970, in Ontario, what would become the Ontario Hockey League vacated the rank of Junior A and declared itself "Major Junior" and eventually became separate from OHA jurisdiction. The remaining Junior A leagues in Ontario remained at the Junior A level, such as the Thunder Bay Junior A Hockey League of the Thunder Bay Amateur Hockey Association, the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey Association of the Northern Ontario Hockey Association, and the Central Junior A Hockey League of the Ottawa District Hockey Association. The departure of the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League left the Ontario Hockey Association with no available Junior A league. Ontario Hockey League
The Ontario Hockey League (OHL; ) is one of the three major junior ice hockey leagues which constitute the Canadian Hockey League, alongside the Western Hockey League and the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League. The league is for players aged 16–20. There are currently 20 teams in the OHL: seventeen in Ontario, two in Michigan, and one in Pennsylvania. The league was founded in 1980 when its predecessor, the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League, formally split away from the Ontario Hockey Association, joining the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League and its direct affiliation with Hockey Canada. The OHL traces its history of Junior A hockey back to 1933 with the partition of Junior A and B. In 1970, the OHA Junior A League was one of five Junior A leagues operating in Ontario. The OHA was promoted to Tier I Junior A for the 1970–71 season and took up the name Ontario Major Junior Hockey League. Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League (1972-1987)
The Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) is a Junior A ice hockey league in Ontario, Canada. It is under the supervision of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) and the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL). The league dates back to 1954 where it began as the "Central Junior B Hockey League". In 1993, the Central Junior B Hockey League was promoted to the Junior A level and renamed the "Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League". In 2009, the league was dissolved by the Ontario Hockey Association and split into two leagues: the "Central Canadian Hockey League" and the "Ontario Junior A Hockey League". By early 2010, the two leagues merged to reform the Ontario Junior Hockey League. At its peak, the league was composed of 37 teams and is now mostly based in the Greater Toronto Area with a few teams eastward towards Kingston, Ontario, Kingston.
