Aalholm
Aalholm, also Aalholm Castle ( da, Aalholm Slot), is a castle and country estate in Nysted in the municipality of Guldborgsund, on the south coast of the island of Lolland, Denmark. It is the oldest castle on the island, first mentioned in 1329. The main building was built in 1300–1585, with major rebuilding especially in 1768 and in 1889 under Hans Jørgen Holm and Gotfred Tvede. Inscriptions in the building show that it was originally completed in 1585. History The castle was initially the seat of the king's vassal or ''lensmand'', and thus the centre of local government. It is not known when the castle was founded, but for historical reasons, it was probably around 1200. During this period, a number of royal castles were built across the country to strengthen the king's power in the regions and guard against attack. Guldborgsund is a municipality ( Danish, '' kommune'') in Region Sjælland in Denmark, created on 1 January 2007 from six (6) former municipalities on the two islands Lolland in the west and Falster in the east bordering the Guldborgsund strait. It covers an area of 903.15 km² (2013) and has a total population of 61,219 (1 January 2018). Its neighboring municipalities are Lolland to the west and Vordingborg to the north. Emil Aarestrup
Carl Ludvig Emil Aarestrup (4 December 1800 in Copenhagen – 21 July 1856 in Odense) was a Danish physician and poet, who had just one single volume of poetry published throughout his lifetime, yet this gave him a lasting place in Danish literature, due to the originality of the poems, as well as their persistent exploration of erotic themes, somewhat uncommon to the day. Life and career Aarestrup was born in Store Kongensgade in Copenhagen, in a period designated by the Napoleonic wars, which Denmark had been dragged into, and which left the country officially bankrupt. Nonetheless, this period is often characterized as the Danish Golden Age. His father was a customs officer in the service of the absolute monarchy and also a bon vivant. Sydfalster
Until 1 January 2007 Sydfalster was a municipality ( Danish, '' kommune'') in the former Storstrøm County on the southern end of the island of Falster in south Denmark. Overview The municipality covered an area of 113 km², and had a total population of 6,953 (2005), which was approx. quadrupled in the summer months, when tourists come to the beaches and resorts of the east coast of the island. Storstrøm County
Storstrøms Amt (English ''Storstrøm County'') is a former county ( Danish: ''amt'') on the islands of Zealand (''Sjælland''), Møn, Falster, Lolland and some minor islands in southeast Denmark. The county was formed on 1 April 1970, comprising the former counties of Maribo and Præstø. The county was abolished effective January 1, 2007, when it merged into Region Sjælland (i.e. ''Region Zealand''). The county was a somewhat artificial construction as the islands of Lolland and Falster did not traditionally share any institutions with Zealand, but rather with Funen.
