North Burnett Region
The North Burnett Region is a local government area in Queensland, Australia in the northern catchment of the Burnett River. Established in 2008, it was preceded by several previous local government areas with histories extending back to the early 1900s. It has an estimated operating budget of A$32 million. History Prior to the 2008 amalgamation, the North Burnett Region, located in the northern catchment of the Burnett River, existed as six distinct local government areas: * the Shire of Biggenden; * the Shire of Eidsvold; * the Shire of Gayndah; * the Shire of Monto; * the Shire of Mundubbera; * and the Shire of Perry. The Shire of Gayndah was a local government area located in the northern catchment of the Burnett River, Queensland, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed as a local government area from 1866 until 2008, when it amalgamated with several other shires to form the North Burnett Region. Major activities in the shire included citrus production, beef and timber. History The first local government in the area was the Borough of Gayndah, serving the town of Gayndah, which was created on 28 November 1866 under the ''Municipal Corporations Act 1864''. Under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879'', the Rawbelle Division was created on 11 November 1879 to serve the surrounding rural area with a population of 755. Dallarnil, Queensland
Dallarnil is a rural town and locality in the North Burnett Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Dallarnil had a population of 230 people. The neighbourhood of Stanton is within the locality (). History The town takes its name from the railway station name on the Isis railway line, assigned by the Queensland Railways Department on 2 September 1911. The railway station name was derived from the name of a pastoral run name, and is a corruption of an Aboriginal word, "''conalaman''" meaning ''big hill''. Stanton takes its name from the railway station name on the Isis railway line assigned by the Queensland Railways Department on 16 July 1914, which in turn takes its name from the pastoral run Stanton Harcourt named in 1854. Coalstoun Lakes, Queensland
Coalstoun Lakes is a rural town and locality in the North Burnett Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Coalstoun Lakes had a population of 114 people. Geography The Isis Highway passes through the locality from north-east to south, also passing through the town (where it is called Main Street). The Coalstoun Lakes National Park is in the north-east of the locality. History The lakes (from which the district takes its name) were named by local pioneer, Nugent Wade Brown, in 1894. There are various theories as to the origin of the name. * One is that ''Coalstoun'' is the corruption of an Aboriginal word ''Goanalganai''. * Another theory is that the name 'Coalstoun' is a corruption of the word 'Colstoun'. ABC Wide Bay
ABC Wide Bay is an ABC Local Radio station based in Bundaberg broadcasting to the Wide Bay–Burnett region of Queensland. This includes the towns of Maryborough, Gympie, Hervey Bay and Mundubbera. History The station began broadcasting as 4QB in 1948 originally as a relay of the national program. The station was originally based in Maryborough, the traditional capital of the Wide-Bay region. The station negotiated with the School of Arts in 1950 to rent out a small office on the first floor of the school's building for broadcast, and thus it was opened 20 November, 1950. Programs originally consisted of music and local information. The station's local services increased over the years, and in 1952 the first proper newsroom was established with Don Harvey at the helm. Biggenden is a rural town and locality in the North Burnett Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Biggenden had a population of 845 people. Geography Biggenden is on the Isis Highway north-west of the state capital Brisbane, and west of Maryborough. History The name is derived from the Kabi word ''bigindhan'' meaning a ''place of stringybark''. Biggenden was founded in 1889 as a service centre to the short-lived goldrush towns of Paradise and Shamrock; and for coach passengers travelling west from Maryborough. The township, including the intriguingly named ''Live And Let Live Inn'', moved to a new location alongside the railway station when the rail line arrived in 1891.
