Andros, Bahamas
Andros Island is an archipelago within the Bahamas, the largest of the Bahamian Islands. Politically considered a single island, Andros in total has an area greater than all the other 700 Bahamian islands combined. The land area of Andros consists of hundreds of small islets and cays connected by mangrove estuaries and tidal swamplands, together with three major islands: North Andros, Mangrove Cay, and South Andros. The three main islands are separated by bights, estuaries that trifurcate the island from east to west. It is long by wide at the widest point. Etymology The indigenous Lucayan people called the island ''Habacoa'' (or ''Babucca'') meaning "large upper outer land". Originally named ''Espiritu Santu'' by the Spanish, Andros Island was given its present name sometime early during the period of British colonial rule. The Bahamas Local Government Act Of 1996
The Bahamas Local Government Act of 1996 is a piece of legislation of the Bahamas. In 1996, the Bahamian Parliament passed "The Local Government Act" to facilitate the establishment of Family Island Administrators, Local Government Districts, Local District Councillors, and Local Town Committees for the various island communities. The overall goal of this act is to allow the various elected leaders to govern and oversee the affairs of their respective districts without the interference of Central Government. In total, there are 31 districts, with elections being held every three years. There are also one hundred and ten Councillors and two hundred and eighty-one Town Committee members to correspond with the various districts. Each Councillor or Town Committee member is responsible for the proper use of public funds for the maintenance and development of their district. Local government in the Bahamas exists in two forms, namely second-schedule and third-schedule district councils. There are a total of 32 local government districts: 13 second-schedule districts, which are further sub-divided into town areas, and 19 third-schedule districts, which are all unitary authorities. The second and third schedules together make up the first schedule. Local government policy is formulated and administered by the Department of Lands and Local Government through the Office of the Prime Minister. The day-to-day policy handling of the portfolio falls to the Minister of Local Government who also is empowered to create new local government areas from time to time based on demographics. Nicholls Town
Nicholls Town is a town located in North Andros, part of Andros, Bahamas, Andros island in the Bahamas. The town features a sweeping beachfront. It is named for Edward Nicolls, an Anglo-Irish military leader in the Caribbean in the early 19th century. He was an active Abolitionism, abolitionist and because of him many former slaves were able to escape from the U.S. The founders of Nicholls Town were ex-slave refugees from the United States. Stafford Creek
Stafford Creek is a town on North Andros Island in the Bahamas. It is about north of Staniard Creek and about west of Nassau and about southeast of Miami. In 2010, the town had a population of 98. The main road in Stafford creek is off the Queen's Highway. Stafford Creek relies on fly fishing. The closest airport is north, near Nicholls Town.
