Nobuko JoAnne Miyamoto
Nobuko JoAnne Miyamoto (born November 14, 1939) is a Japanese American folk singer, songwriter, author, and activist in the Asian American Movement. She was a member of the band Yellow Pearl along with Chris Kando Iijima and Charlie Chin. They are known for co-creating the 1973 folk album ''A Grain of Sand: Music for the Struggle by Asians in America''. This album is considered the first Asian-American album in history. She was a member of the band Warriors of the Rainbow during the late 1970s. In 2021, Miyamoto released an album titled ''120,000 Stories'', named after the approximate number of Japanese Americans, Miyamoto included, who were incarcerated by the U.S. government during World War II. She uses her music as a platform for her activism concerning issues such as the Asian American Movement, the Black Lives Matter Movement, and climate change. ''The King and I'' is a 1956 American musical film made by 20th Century-Fox, directed by Walter Lang and produced by Charles Brackett and Darryl F. Zanuck. The screenplay by Ernest Lehman is based on the 1951 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical ''The King and I'', based on the 1944 novel '' Anna and the King of Siam'' by Margaret Landon. That novel in turn was based on memoirs written by Anna Leonowens, who became school teacher to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. Leonowens' stories were autobiographical, although various elements of them have been called into question. The film stars Deborah Kerr and Yul Brynner. The film was a critical and commercial success, and was nominated for 9 Oscars, winning 5, including Best Actor for Brynner. An animated film adaptation of the same musical was released in 1999. Asian Americans are Americans of Asian people, Asian ancestry (including Naturalization, naturalized Americans who are Immigration to the United States, immigrants from specific regions in Asia and descendants of such immigrants). Although this term had historically been used for all the indigenous peoples of the continent of Asia, the usage of the term "Asian" by the United States Census Bureau only includes people with origins or ancestry from the Far East, Southeast Asia, and the Indian subcontinent and excludes people with ethnic origins in certain parts of Asia, including Western Asia, West Asia who are now categorized as Middle Eastern Americans.
