Ningura Napurrula
Ningura Napurrula (born c.1938 – 2013) was a Pintupi-speaking Indigenous Australian artist from the Western Desert, whose work was internationally acclaimed. Her works included a site-specific commission for the ceiling of the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris, as well as appearing on an Australian postage stamp. Personal life Napurrula was born circa 1938 in Watulka, south of Kiwirrkurra in the East Gibson Desert, Western Australia. Her first journey out of the desert was in 1962 with the Northern Territory Welfare Branch patrol, when her son needed medical treatment at Papunya. She travelled with her son and her husband, Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi, back to Kiwirrkurra that year. The following year Napurrula and her family group returned, this time as part of a migration of the Pintupi people due to drought. Napurrula died on 11 November 2013 from kidney disease. Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi
Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungarrayi (c. 1928 or 1924 – 1998) was a Pintupi-speaking Indigenous Australian artist. He was born at Iltuturunga, south-west of Lake Macdonald, in the Western Desert, close to the border of Western Australia and the Northern Terriitory. In 1963, together with his family he moved to Papunya in the Northern Territory. Tjungarrayi was one of the first group of artists painting in the Papunya Tula cooperative from its beginnings in 1971. His wife was Ningura Napurrla, another Papunya Tula artist. He was a custodian of Pintupi sacred ceremonies and sites. Papunya Tula
Papunya Tula, registered as Papunya Tula Artists Pty Ltd, is an artist cooperative formed in 1972 in Papunya, Northern Territory, owned and operated by Aboriginal people from the Western Desert of Australia. The group is known for its innovative work with the Western Desert Art Movement, popularly referred to as "dot painting". Credited with bringing contemporary Aboriginal art to world attention, its artists inspired many other Australian Aboriginal artists and styles. The company operates today out of Alice Springs and its artists are drawn from a large area, extending into Western Australia, west of Alice Springs.
