Newtown is a suburb in the City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. In the , Newtown had a population of 1,615 people. Geography Newtown is bordered by Queens Park to the west, to the north by Brisbane Road, the city's main arterial link to the Ipswich Motorway. A small set of shops lies on the five-ways intersection where Brisbane Road, Queen Victoria Parade, Glebe Road and Chermside Road meet. History The suburb takes its name from a housing estate sold by John Rankin about 1865. Newtown State School opened on 1 July 1882. The Queensland Rail Citytrain network, provides urban, suburban and interurban electric passenger railway services in South East Queensland, Australia. History The first railway in Queensland did not run to Brisbane, but ran from Ipswich to Grandchester and opened in July 1865. Rockton is a heritage-listed villa at Rockton Street, Newtown, City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1855 onwards. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History Rockton is a substantial brick house, the first section of which was built as a cottage for bank manager William Craies and his wife Sabina in 1855. The cottage was progressively extended and altered by successive owners over a long period, producing a complex but surprisingly harmonious house with great character. In the 1850s, Craies was commuting between Ipswich and Brisbane as manager of the branches of the Bank of New South Wales in both towns. He then resigned and came to work full-time in Ipswich as a partner with the merchant Walter Gray and Co. St Michaels Nursing Home is a heritage-listed nursing home at 68 Chermside Road, Newtown, City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. It was built . It is also known as Gwennap. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History St Michaels, or "Gwennap", as it was originally known, was built for timber merchant Josias Hancock around 1874. At that time the area around Chermside Road Fiveways was a considerable distance from town, the only other families in the area being the Bullmore's of "Rockton" and the Shillitos.
