New American Cyclopædia
The ''New American Cyclopædia'' was an encyclopedia created and published by D. Appleton & Company of New York in 16 volumes, which initially appeared between 1858 and 1863. Its primary editors were George Ripley and Charles Anderson Dana. The ''New American Cyclopædia'' was revised and republished as the ''American Cyclopædia'' in 1873. Includes photograph of title page. Overview The ''New American Cyclopædia'' was a general encyclopedia with a special focus on subjects related to the United States. As it was created over the years spanning the American Civil War, the focus and tone of articles could change drastically; for example, Jefferson Davis, the future president of the Confederate States of America, was treated at length as a United States Army soldier and US government politician in pre-war editions. William Bross
William J. Bross (November 4, 1813 – January 27, 1890) was an American politician and publisher originally from the New Jersey–New York–Pennsylvania tri-state area. He was also elected as the 16th Lieutenant Governor of Illinois. He engaged in the lumber trade with his father before attending Williams College. He taught at schools for ten years, then headed west to Chicago, Illinois. He engaged in book-selling and publishing interests before co-founding the successful ''Democratic Press'' paper. Following the organization of the Republican Party in 1854, Bross became a staunch supporter of its political candidates. His support for Abraham Lincoln helped him win support for a bid as Lieutenant Governor. In 1865, he accompanied future Vice President of the United States Schuyler Colfax on a trip west to California, later publishing a book about the excursion. Orestes Augustus Brownson (September 16, 1803 – April 17, 1876) was an American intellectual and activist, preacher, labor organizer, and noted Catholic convert and writer. Brownson was a publicist, a career which spanned his affiliation with the New England Transcendentalists through his subsequent conversion to Roman Catholicism. Early years and education Brownson was born on September 16, 1803, to Sylvester Augustus Brownson and Relief Metcalf, who were farmers in Stockbridge, Vermont. Sylvester Brownson died when Orestes was young and Relief decided to give her son up to a nearby adoptive family when he was six years old. Edmund March Blunt (June 20, 1770 – January 4, 1862) was an American navigator, author, and publisher of nautical magazines. He established a nautical book and chart publishing firm that became the largest publishing firm in the early 19th century. In 1796, he published ''American Coastal Pilot'', which described every port of the United States. Blunt created a map in 1796 of what is now the Federated States of Micronesia. Lorin Blodget
Lorin Blodget (May 23, 1823 in Busti, Chautauqua County, New York – 1901), American physicist and writer. Blodget was born near Jamestown and attended the Jamestown Academy. He later attended a college now called Hobart College in Geneva, NY. In 1851, he became assistant professor at the Smithsonian Institution at Washington. He may be said to have laid the foundation of American climatology. In 1855, he published a quarto volume of climatological observations, and in 1857 ''Climatology of the United States'', a work extensively circulated and very favorably received in Europe. He was editor of the ''North American'', published in Philadelphia, and secretary of the Philadelphia Board of Trade from 1858 to 1864.
