Insight Guides, founded by Hans Johannes Hofer, is a travel company based in London with offices in Singapore and Warsaw. It sells customised package tours as well as guide books for hundreds of destinations worldwide. It also produces guide books, travel books, maps, globes, and travel gadgets for travelers. In 2018, packaged tours represented 18% of revenue. History Hofer's first book, published in 1970, was based on the island of Bali, and was funded by a local hotel. From there, he grew his business, creating over 400 guidebooks to over 100 destinations. The Insight Guide branding was first used in the 1980s. Péter Eötvös
Péter Eötvös ( hu, Eötvös Péter, ; born 2 January 1944) is a Hungarian composer, conductor and teacher. Eötvös was born in Székelyudvarhely, Transylvania, then part of Hungary, now Romania. He studied composition in Budapest and Cologne. From 1962, he composed for film in Hungary. Eötvös played regularly with the Stockhausen Ensemble between 1968 and 1976. He was a founding member of the Oeldorf Group in 1973, continuing his association until the late 1970s. From 1979 to 1991, he was musical director and conductor of the Ensemble InterContemporain (EIC). From 1985 to 1988, he was principal guest conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Šimon Voseček
Šimon Voseček (13 April 1978) is an Austrian-Czech composer. He is known for his opera ''"Biedermann und die Brandstifter"'' (''"Biedermann and the Arsonists"'', (2005-2007; 2013; 2015), which was premiered in Vienna by Neue Oper Wien in 2013). Biography Šimon Voseček was born in Prague. Soon he started to dance, his musical interests were later expanded by learning piano and organ. After finishing a high school he studied composition at the Prague Conservatory with Otomar Kvěch. Sir Harrison Birtwistle (15 July 1934 – 18 April 2022) was an English composer of contemporary classical music best known for his operas, often based on mythological subjects. Among his many compositions, his better known works include ''The Triumph of Time'' (1972) and the operas ''The Mask of Orpheus'' (1986), ''Gawain'' (1991), and '' The Minotaur'' (2008). The last of these was ranked by music critics at ''The Guardian'' in 2019 as the third-best piece of the 21st-century. Elfriede Jelinek (; born 20 October 1946) is an Austrian playwright and novelist. Detlev Glanert (born 6 September 1960) is a German opera composer, who has also composed numerous works for chamber and full orchestra, including three symphonies. Life Detlev Glanert was born in Hamburg in 1960. He came to music late, learning his first instrument, the trumpet, at the age of eleven and not starting his formal composition studies until his twenties, when he studied under Diether de la Motte, Günther Friedrichs and Frank Michael Beyer, and then for four years under Hans Werner Henze in Cologne. Elliott Cook Carter Jr. (December 11, 1908 – November 5, 2012) was an American modernist composer. One of the most respected composers of the second half of the 20th century, he combined elements of European modernism and American "ultra-modernism" into a distinctive style with a personal harmonic and rhythmic language, after an early neoclassical phase. Thomas Pernes (25 February 1956 – 26 February 2018) was an Austrian avant-garde composer and performance artist who lived and worked in Vienna. He studied piano with Bruno Seidlhofer and composition with Roman Haubenstock-Ramati. The start of his career in contemporary music was marked by the première of the 1st string quartet at Wiener Konzerthaus in 1976. Already in the early 1980s he had widened the narrow sphere of interest of the classical avant-garde. Josef Winkler (born 3 March 1953) is an Austrian writer. Biography Josef Winkler was born in Kamering near Paternion in Carinthia (Kärnten) and grew up on his parents' farm. He describes his home as a world without language ("sprachlose Welt") and early on felt drawn to language as a mode of self-expression. He grew up in the context of a difficult triangle – a rather rough father, by whom he felt rejected; a mother who lost her own brothers early on and fell silent; and a deaf-mute farmgirl. When his mother explained that there was no money for books, Winkler soon recognized the (intellectual) class difference between the sons of farmers and teachers. Dieter Kaufmann (born 22 April 1941) is an Austrian composer. Biography Kaufmann was born in Vienna and grew up in Carinthia. He studied music, German philology, art history, violoncello, composition (with Karl Schiske, Gottfried von Einem, Olivier Messiaen and René Leibowitz) and electro-acoustic music (with Pierre Schaeffer and François Bayle at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales of the French Radio) in Vienna and Paris.
