NHL Supplemental Draft
The NHL Supplemental Draft was a draft that was established by the National Hockey League as an offshoot of the NHL Entry Draft between 1986 and 1994. The Supplemental Draft was used by teams to select collegiate ice hockey players who were not eligible for the standard entry draft. It was created in response to the bidding wars between NHL teams to sign college hockey stars like Adam Oates and Ray Staszak, both of whom signed multi-year contracts with the Detroit Red Wings worth over one million dollars in 1985. The first draft was held on September 17, 1986, a month after the NHL Players' Association approved a new contract with the league allowing the owners to hold a two-round supplemental draft before the entry draft. Draft (sports)
A draft is a process used in some countries (especially in North America) and sports (especially in closed leagues) to allocate certain players to teams. In a draft, teams take turns selecting from a pool of eligible players. When a team selects a player, the team receives exclusive rights to sign that player to a contract, and no other team in the league may sign the player. The process is similar to round-robin item allocation. The best-known type of draft is the entry draft, which is used to allocate players who have recently become eligible to play in a league. Depending on the sport, the players may come from college, high school or junior teams, or teams in other countries. Ian Kidd (born May 11, 1964) is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman. He played 30 games for the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL) between 1987 and 1989, but spent the bulk of his professional career in the minor International Hockey League. Stephen K. Guolla (born March 15, 1973) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League for the San Jose Sharks, Tampa Bay Lightning, Atlanta Thrashers and the New Jersey Devils. David Wilmer Snuggerud (born June 20, 1966) is an American former professional ice hockey right wing who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) between 1989 and 1993. He was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1987 NHL Supplemental Draft out of the University of Minnesota. Internationally Snuggerud played for the American national team at the 1988 Winter Olympics and the 1989 World Championships. Playing career After playing three seasons for the Golden Gophers and one for the U.S. National Team, Snuggerud joined the Sabres for the 1989–90 season. Steve P. Martins (born April 13, 1972) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League (NHL). Biography As a youth, Martins played in the 1986 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Gatineau, Quebec. James Paul Baker (born August 31, 1966) is a Canadian former ice hockey player, having played for the Quebec Nordiques, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks, and Toronto Maple Leafs. He was a former radio personality for the San Jose Sharks and was their television color commentator from 2014 to 2020. Todd Andrew Krygier (born October 12, 1965) is an American former professional ice hockey player. Playing career A defenseman, Chambers played college hockey at the University of Alaska Fairbanks from 1985-1987. Cory Cross (born January 3, 1971) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman, who played twelve seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). Draft Cross was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning first overall in the 1992 NHL Supplemental Draft.
