History The magazine's predecessor was titled ''Asszonyok'' ("Women" or "Ladies"), which was first published in June 1945 by the Democratic Association of Hungarian Women (MNDSZ), with the support of the Hungarian Communist Party. On 1 October 1949, the magazine ceased publication. Shortly, ''Asszonyok'' was replaced by ''Nők Lapja'', with its first issue published on 20 October 1949. The Democratic Association of Hungarian Women (Hungarian: ''Magyar Nők Demokratikus Szövetsége'' or MNDSZ), was a state women's organization in Communist Hungary, founded in 1945.Marilyn Rueschemeyer, Women in the Politics of Postcommunist Eastern Europe' History It was a state organization and a branch of the Communist Party, the Hungarian Working People's Party. It was formally dissolved in 1956, but was refounded under a new name and continued to function until 1989. Its purpose was to mobilise women in the political ideology of the state, as well as to enforce the party's policy within gender roles and women's rights. The party policy of women's rights were progressive during the Communist regime; discrimination based on gender was prohibited, full legal equality was secured, and it was a part of the task of the organization to address all gender discrimination. Hungarian Communist Party
The Hungarian Communist Party (, , abbr. MKP), known earlier as the Party of Communists in Hungary (, , abbr. KMP), was a communist party in Hungary that existed during the interwar period and briefly after World War II. It was founded on November 24, 1918, as Party of Communists in Hungary, and was in power between March and August 1919 when Béla Kun ran the short-lived Hungarian Soviet Republic. The communist government was later overthrown by the Romanian Army, Kun was exiled to Vienna and later he and many other communists moved to Moscow. During those years, membership was becoming smaller every year. During World War II the party changed its name to the Peace Party, but only a year later in 1944, they embraced a new name which they would hold until 1948. While most of the website's articles are written in Hungarian, Index also publishes several articles in English every week.
