Nøtterøy Municipality
Nøtterøy is a former municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The island municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution on 1 January 2018. The area is now part of Færder Municipality. The administrative centre was the village of Borgheim. Other villages in Nøtterøy included Årøysund, Buerstad, Duken, Føynland, Glomstein, Hårkollen, Kjøpmannskjær, Nesbrygga, Oterbekk, Skallestad, Skjerve, Strengsdal, Tenvik, Torød, Vestskogen, and Vollen. The whole northern part of the municipality was considered to be part of the city of Tønsberg metropolitan area. The municipality was made up of nearly 200 islands, including the main island of Nøtterøy plus Veierland and Føynland. At the time of its dissolution in 2017, the municipality was the 410th largest by area out of the 426 municipalities in Norway. Borgheim
Borgheim is the administrative centre of Færder Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The village is located on the central part of the island of Nøtterøy. The village lies about west of the village of Nesbrygga, about to the northwest of the village of Vollen, about north of the village of Skjerve, and about southeast of the village of Vestskogen. The historic Nøtterøy Church is located in Borgheim. The village of Borgheim and the surrounding countryside has a population (in 2023) of 557. It is considered to be part of the urban city of Tønsberg metropolitan area which includes the central city area plus the northern and eastern parts of the island of Nøtterøy. Formannskapsdistrikt
() was the name of a Norwegian self-governing municipality. The name was used from the establishment these municipalities in 1838 until the name fell out of use in 1863. The municipalities had their legal basis from two laws enacted on 14 January 1837. The laws established two types of ; one for cities () and one for rural districts (). These districts were mostly based on the former parishes. City municipalities had a monopoly on trade in both the municiality and for surrounding districts. Veierland
Veierland is a populated, Car-free islands, car-free island in Færder Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The island is located in the Tønsbergfjorden, between the mainland (to the west), the island of Tjøme (island), Tjøme (to the east), and the island of Nøtterøy (island), Nøtterøy (to the northeast). Veierland Church was established in 1905. Historically, there was a Veierland School, however this closed in 2013. Veierland is primarily a summer vacation community. The island has a shoreline with many popular swimming beaches including Kjølholmen, Hverveodden, and Kongshavn. Places for accommodation and eateries are open during the summer months. Veierland has been inhabited as long as Vestfold county. The island has a permanent year-round population of about 150 people, however, the island experiences significant summer tourism. Nøtterøy (island)
Nøtterøy is the largest island in Vestfold county, Norway. The island is mostly located in Færder Municipality, but a small area on the far northern shore belongs to Tønsberg Municipality. The island is between the Ytre Oslofjord (to the east) and the Tønsbergfjorden (to the west). Most of the northern part of the island is considered part of the Tønsberg (town), city of Tønsberg metropolitan area which spans parts of Tønsberg and Færder municipalities. In the southern part of the island, there are three larger urban villages: Glomstein on the west coast, Kjøpmannskjær on the south coast, and Årøysund on the east coast. Tønsberg (town)
Tønsberg (), historically Tunsberg, is a city in Tønsberg Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. It is located about south-southwest of the capital city of Oslo on the western coast of the Oslofjord near its mouth onto the Skagerrak. The city is the most populous metropolis in Vestfold county. Tønsberg also serves as the administrative centre for Vestfold county and the seat of the County Governor of Vestfold og Telemark. Tønsberg is generally regarded as the oldest city in Norway, founded in the 9th century. Snorri Sturluson mentions the town in Harald Hårfagre's saga (written around 1220) before the battle at Hafrsfjord, which historians have traditionally dated to the year 872, therefore the town was in existence by 871 at the latest.
