Patric (singer)
Patric (born Patrick Martin in 1947) is an Occitan singer. He is one of the main figures of Nòva cançon, a music phenomenon promoting Occitanism. He's notable for several songs, for example his 2010 cover of the song " Bella ciao" in Occitan language. Biography At the end of the 1960s, Patric was a student in Montpellier, a pupil of Robert Lafont. Patric became one of the first to sing in Occitan, spearheading the Nòva cançon movement. He takes his first name as his stage name, since he often was confused with another Occitan singer Claudi Martí. His first lyrics address the themes of the Occitan claim—problems of Languedoc viticulture, youth discomfort, refusal of uprooting, and internal colonialism. Patric writes his own songs in both Occitan and French, as well as covering songs in Occitan by other singers such as Lluís Llach and Bob Dylan. In 2012, he recorded a CD of his songs translated into Esperanto Esperanto (, ) is the world's most widely spoken Co ...

Nova Cançó
The Nova Cançó (, meaning in English "The New Song") was an artistic movement that promoted Catalan music in Francoist Spain. The movement sought to normalize use of the Catalan language in popular music and denounced the injustices in Francoist Spain. The Grup de Folk, which emerged in the same period, also promoted a new form of popular music in Catalan, drawing inspiration from contemporary American and British music. Historical context The Nova Cançó movement originated at the end of the 1950s, twenty years after the installation of the Spanish State with its repressive policies against the Catalan language and Catalan culture. The late 1950s were a period of economic and political change in Spain: Spain ended its policy of economic autarky, and Francoist Spain was admitted to the United Nations, which required the government to improve its image abroad. In this new context, at the beginning of the 1960s, new cultural projects emerged in Catalonia. In 1961, the record la ...

Occitan Nationalism
Occitan nationalism is a social and political movement in Occitania. Nationalists seek self-determination, greater autonomy or the creation of a sovereign state of Occitania. The basis of nationalism is linguistic and cultural although currently the Occitan language is a minority status within the language area. Current affairs The Occitan political movement for self-government has existed since the beginning of the 20th century and particularly since the post-war era. Occitan nationalism emerges as a sense of grievance of Southern France caused by the economic and energy restructuring undertaken by the Gaullism, Gaullists during the 1960s, which would have given priority to the more prosperous northern regions of France. Subsequently, from 1968 one Occitan cultural revival, combined with the economic protest, given the results in 1970 in a nationalist claim that it considered Occitania was an internal colony of the French state. The movement remains negligible in electoral a ...
