Numismatists
A numismatist is a specialist, researcher, and/or well-informed collector of numismatics/coins ("of coins"; from Late Latin , genitive of ). Numismatists can include collectors, specialist dealers, and scholar-researchers who use coins (and possibly, other currency) in object-based research. Although use of the term ''numismatics'' was first recorded in English in 1799, people had been collecting and studying coins long before then all over the world. American Numismatic Association
The American Numismatic Association (ANA) is an organization founded in 1891 by George Francis Heath. Located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, it was formed to advance the knowledge of numismatics (the study of coins) along educational, historical, and scientific lines, as well as to enhance interest in the hobby. The ANA has more than 24,000 individual members who receive many benefits, such as discounts, access to website features, and the monthly journal '' The Numismatist''. The ANA's Colorado Springs headquarters houses its administrative offices, library, and money museum. The ANA received a federal charter from the United States Congress in 1912. Coin Grading
Coin grading is the process of determining the grade or condition of a coin, one of the key factors in determining its collectible value. A coin's grade is generally determined by six criteria: strike, preservation, luster, color, attractiveness, and occasionally the country/state in which it was minted. Walter Breen
Walter Henry Breen Jr. (September 5, 1928 – April 27, 1993) was an American numismatist, writer, and convicted child sex offender. He was known among coin collectors for writing ''Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins''; "Breen numbers", from his encyclopedia, are widely used to attribute varieties of coins. He was also known for activity in the science fiction fan community and for his writings in defense of pederasty as a NAMBLA activist. He was arrested in 1990 for child sex abuse and died in prison three years later. From 1964 to 1990 Breen was married to popular science fiction and fantasy author Marion Zimmer Bradley; it was later revealed that Bradley had been aware of his crimes. Richard Abdy
Richard Anthony Abdy (born 1970) is a British numismatist at the British Museum, specialising in Roman coins. Biography Abdy graduated in 1992 from the University of Glasgow with a degree in History. His area of expertise is Britain in Roman times and its border fortifications, known as the Limes Britannicus. He worked on coin hoards on the Antonine Wall with Keith Rutter of the Hunter Coin Collection at the University of Glasgow. He joined the staff of the British Museum in 1993, as an assistant in the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities. In 1998 he became one of the two curators of Iron Age and Roman Empire coins in the Department of Coins and Medals.
