Nouakchott
Nouakchott ( ) is the capital and largest city of Mauritania. Located in the southwestern part of the country, it is one of the largest cities in the Sahara. The city also serves as the administrative and economic center of Mauritania. Once a mid-sized coastal village, Nouakchott was selected as the capital for the nascent nation of Mauritania, with construction beginning in 1958. It was originally designed to accommodate a population of 15,000, but experienced significant population growth in the 1970s when many Mauritanians fled their home villages due to drought and increasing desertification. Many of the newcomers settled in slum areas of the city that were poorly maintained and extremely overcrowded. The Regional Council of Nouakchott (, ) is the elected assembly of the city of Nouakchott, Mauritania. It has been led since its creation by Fatimetou Mint Abdel Malick, of El Insaf. History Regional councils were first elected in Mauritania in 2018 following a 2017 constitutional referendum that abolished the Senate, replacing it with regional councils in every wilaya, with the city of Nouakchott (which is subdivided in three wilayas) getting a single Regional Council replacing the Urban Community of Nouakchott. Nouakchott–Oumtounsy International Airport
Nouakchott–Oumtounsy International Airport (, ) is an international airport serving Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania. It is located north of the city. The airport opened in June 2016 as the replacement for Nouakchott International Airport. History Designed by Omer Houessou, the airport is the largest project in Mauritania since 1960. The Government of Mauritania approved the plan on 13 October 2011, and local company Najah for Major Works (NMW) started construction the following month. Oumtounsy Airport opened on 23 June 2016, in time for the 27th Arab League summit in late July. It replaces Nouakchott International Airport, which is located to the south in the city centre.
