Norwich, New York
Norwich is a city and the county seat of Chenango County, New York, United States. Surrounded on all sides by the Town of Norwich, the city's name is taken from Norwich, England. Its population was 7,190 at the 2010 census. Norwich is best known as the headquarters of the strained yogurt company Chobani. History The first log cabin was built in 1788 by Col. William Monroe, who served as a drummer boy during the Revolutionary War. The town of Norwich was formed in 1793 from the towns of Union (now in Broome County) and Bainbridge. Afterwards, Norwich, as a "mother town" of the county, lost substantial territory in the formation of new towns. In 1806, Norwich gave up territory to form the towns of Pharsalia, Plymouth and Preston. More of Norwich was lost in 1807 to form parts of the towns of New Berlin and Columbus. New Berlin, New York
New Berlin is a town in Chenango County in central New York, United States. The population was 2,682 at the 2010 census. The town contains the village of New Berlin. The town is at the eastern border of the county and is northeast of Norwich. History The first European-American settlers arrived , after the American Revolutionary War. This followed the Iroquois League nations being forced to cede most of their territory to the United States following the defeat of their ally Great Britain. The Mohawk and other Iroquois nations moved to Ontario, Canada, where they were granted some land by the British Crown in compensation. Some small reservations were set up for them in New York state. Preston is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,044 at the 2010 census. Preston is an interior town of Chenango County and is west of the city of Norwich. History The first settler arrived ''circa'' 1787. The town was formed from the town of Norwich in 1806, but some of Preston was relinquished to Norwich in 1808. In 1816, part of Preston was used to form the new town of McDonough. In 1820, another section of Norwich was added to Preston. In the year 1865, the population of the town was 982. Pharsalia is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 593 at the 2010 census. The town was named after Pharsalia, which is a commonly accepted name of the decisive battle in the Great Roman Civil War, where Julius Caesar defeated Pompey in 48 BCE. Bainbridge, New York
Bainbridge is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 3,308 at the 2010 census. The Village of Bainbridge is located at the geographic center of the town. History Bainbridge was originally settled by Native Americans of the Iroquois nations. During the American Revolution, these tribes became allies of the British and commenced raids on American settlements. In 1779, George Washington ordered the Sullivan Expedition into what is today Upstate New York. When General James Clinton reached the Bainbridge area, the tribes had fled to sanctuary in Upper Canada. Clinton's forces destroyed their homes and crops, including their winter stores.
