Northwestern Syria Clashes (December 2022 – November 2024)
Starting on 2 December 2022, a series of intensified clashes broke out of the frontlines of the 'Idlib de-escalation zone' located in the governorates of Idlib, Aleppo, Hama and Latakia. These confrontations initiated through inghimasi, infiltration and sniper attacks by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied militant groups against positions held by the pro-government Syrian Arab Army (SAA) positions. These attacks were called We Will Not Reconcile by HTS. In 2023, the first territorial offensive since 2020 was carried out by HTS in the area of Milaja. According to the Syrian Observatory on Human Rights (SOHR), HTS aims to disrupt potential peace negotiations between Turkey and Syria, and is launching the campaign of attacks as a way of rejecting any deal made on the 'de-escalation zone' in Idlib. Ansar Al-Tawhid (Syria)
Ansar al-Tawhid (, ) was an armed Islamist militant group fighting in the Syrian Civil War. The group was made up of former Jund al-Aqsa members. It was allied with Al-Qaeda and part of the Hurras al-Din-led Rouse the Believers Operations Room until May 2020, when it announced its departure from the coalition. At the Syrian Revolution Victory Conference, which was held on 29 January 2025, most factions of the armed opposition, including the Ansar al-Tawhid, announced their dissolution and were incorporated into the newly formed Ministry of Defense. Background Ansar al-Tawhid was established in March 2018 by Abu Diyab al-Sarmini. Liwa Fatemiyoun
Liwa Fatemiyoun (; Persian language, Persian/Dari Persian, Dari: ), literally "Fatimid Liwa (Arabic), Banner" or Fatemiyoun Brigade, also known as Lashkar-e-Fatemiyoun (; Persian language, Persian/Dari Persian, Dari: ) or Fatemiyoun Division is an Afghans, Afghan Hazaras, Hazara Shia militia formed in 2012/13 to fight in Syria on the side of the Ba'athist Syria, Syrian government prior to the collapse of the Ba'athist Syria, Assad regime. The group's officially designated purpose, is the defense of Sayyidah Zaynab Mosque, the shrine of Zaynab bint Ali, and to fight "''takfiri'' terrorists" in Syria, which would come to include the Islamic State (IS). Baqir Brigade
The Baqir Brigade (Arabic'':'' لواء الباقر; ''Liwa al-Baqir''), was a Syrian militia which fought for the Ba'athist government during the Syrian civil war. The militia was one of the most prominent and largest pro-government militias from the Aleppo area and part of the "Local Defence Forces" network. Its members mostly consists of tribesmen from the al-Baggara tribe that traditionally supported the rule of the al-Assad family despite being mostly Sunni Muslim. Though the militia's fighters thus come from a largely Sunni background, many of them have converted to or are at least strongly influenced by Shia Islam. The Baqir Brigade has also been noted for its strong connections to the Lebanese Hezbollah, Iran, and various Shiite Iraqi militias, and was thus generally considered to be a Shia or "Shi'ified" fighting force. The National Defense Forces (NDF; ''Quwāt ad-Difāʿ al-Watanī'') was a Syrian paramilitary volunteer militia, that was formed on 1 November 2012 and organized by Ba'athist Syria during the Syrian civil war as a part-time volunteer reserve component of the Syrian Arab Armed Forces. Republican Guard (Syria)
The Syrian Republican Guard (SRG), also known as the Presidential Guard, is the security unit in the Syrian Army. Prior to the fall of the Assad regime, it reportedly consisted of 60,000 guardsmen. It was composed of two mechanized divisions with its main purpose to protect the capital of Syria, Damascus, from any foreign or domestic threats. Syrian Arab Army
The Syrian Arab Armed Forces (SAAF; ) were the combined armed forces of Syria from 1963 to 2024. They served during the rule of the Ba'ath Party in Syria. The SAAF consisted of the Syrian Arab Army, Syrian Arab Air Force, Syrian Arab Air Defense Force, Syrian Arab Navy. Ba'athist Syria
Ba'athist Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR), was the Syrian state between 1963 and 2024 under the One-party state, one-party rule of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party – Syria Region, Syrian regional branch of the Ba'ath Party (Syrian-dominated faction), Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party.
