Northam Road, George Town
Northam Road is a major thoroughfare along the northern coast of the city of George Town, Penang, George Town in the States and federal territories of Malaysia, Malaysian state of Penang. It continues on from Gurney Drive, George Town, Gurney Drive towards Farquhar Street, George Town, Farquhar Street to the east. Since the 1990s, Northam Road has been part of George Town Central Business District, Penang, the city's Central Business District, and along with Gurney Drive, George Town, Gurney Drive, it has seen a significant increase in financial activity. In the olden days, the northern coast of George Town was simply known as the 'North Beach'. Yeap Chor Ee
Yeap Chor Ee (葉祖意) was a businessman and philanthropist. He was born in the village of Nan'an, Fujian, China, in 1867. He came to Penang at the age of 17 in the 1880s virtually penniless, and found work as a barber. He rose to become the richest men in Penang. Over a course of thirty years, he built an empire with real banking, real estate and commodities trading activities. He founded the The Ban Hin Lee Bank building, Ban Hin Lee Bank in 1918 and many other companies. Yeap Chor Ee remained the only individual who single-handedly funded the establishment of a bank in that era. He also became one of the State's leading philanthropists. Boustead Tower
Boustead Tower, formerly known as PSCI Tower, is an office building within George Town in the Malaysian state of Penang. Located at Northam Road within the city's Central Business District (CBD), the 21-storey building was completed in 1994. It was sold to Boustead Holdings in 2006. Apart from Boustead, IWG plc is one of the major tenants of the tower. History The building, originally named PSCI Tower after its owner, Penang Shipbuilding and Construction Industries (PSCI), was completed in 1994. It comprises a 21-storey office block with a five-storey car park annex on a plot of land. In 2006, PSCI sold the building to Boustead Holdings for RM54 million due to mounting debts. Aside from hosting a branch of CIMB Bank, BHL Tower also houses the Consulate-General of Japan in Penang. Homestead is a mansion in George Town within the Malaysian state of Penang. History The building, situated at No. 54 Northam Road (Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah), George Town, was built in 1919 by Lim Chin Guan for his father, comprador, Lim Mah Chye until his death in 1927. Lim Chin Guan is said to have chosen the site to block the sea-view of his life-long business rival Quah Beng Kee who lived nearby. It was designed by architect James Stark of Stark & McNeill. During the 1940s the building was acquired by wealthy businessman and philanthropist, Yeap Chor Ee, whose statue stands outside, and when he died in 1952 it continued to be used for over 50 years as a residence by his descendants.
