''Norrländska Socialdemokraten'' (''NSD'') ( Swedish: ''The Norrland Social Democrat'') is a daily regional newspaper published in Norrbotten County, Sweden. History and profile As of the division of the Swedish Social Democratic Workers' Party in May 1917, ''NSD'' was founded in 1918 because the original regional organ for the party, '' Norrskensflamman'', went with the vast majority of the social democratic district to join the newly founded Swedish Social Democratic Left Party. The newspaper was first published on 4 January 1919, and the stated position of the editorial page is "social democratic". In 2010 it was the largest morning newspaper in the region, as well as the largest newspaper published north of Uppsala with a circulation of 35,600. The circulation of the paper was 32,300 copies in 2011. The paper had a circulation of 31,000 copies in 2012 and 30,100 copies in 2013. ''Flamman'' (meaning ''The Flame'' in English), also known as ''Norrskensflamman'' (meaning ''The Flame of the Aurora Borealis'' in English), is a Swedish socialist newspaper. History and profile ''Flamman'' was founded in 1906 by the workers in Malmfälten and was the regional newspaper of the Swedish Social Democratic Workers' Party. The circulation of the paper reached its peak in the 1920s, with 11,000 daily copies. After the Social Democratic Party was divided in 1917, the newspaper became a regional organ of the Swedish Social Democratic Left Party (SSV) in Norrbotten County, and later the Swedish Communist Party (SKP). Norrbotten (), known in English as North Bothnia, is a Swedish province (''landskap'') in northernmost Sweden. It borders south to Västerbotten, west to Swedish Lapland, and east to Finland. Administration The traditional provinces of Sweden serve no administrative or political purposes, but are historical and cultural entities. In this case, however, the county is older than the province. When the new national border to the Russian Grand Duchy of Finland formed, the province of Västerbotten split in two, and formed the municipalities of Kolari, Muonio, Pello, Tornio, and Ylitornio. However, Finnish Västerbotten is not recognized enough as its own historical province, so it's usually merged instead with Ostrobothnia, however leaving out Muonio to Laponia. The Left Party ( sv, Vänsterpartiet ; V) is a socialist political party in Sweden. On economic issues, the party opposes privatizations and advocates increased public expenditure. A tabloid is a newspaper with a compact page size smaller than broadsheet. There is no standard size for this newspaper format. Etymology The word ''tabloid'' comes from the name given by the London-based pharmaceutical company Burroughs Wellcome & Co. to the compressed tablets they marketed as "Tabloid" pills in the late 1880s. The connotation of ''tabloid'' was soon applied to other small compressed items. A 1902 item in London's ''Westminster Gazette'' noted, "The proprietor intends to give in tabloid form all the news printed by other journals."
