Norman Laurence Gilbreath
Norman Laurence Gilbreath (born 1936) is an American magician and author known for originating the Gilbreath shuffle.The Mathematical Ideas That Animate Great Magic Tricks' by Persi Diaconis & Ron Graham, Chapter 5: From the Gilbreath Principle to the Mandelbrot Set, Princeton University Press (2011), He is also known for Gilbreath's conjecture concerning prime numbers. Life and career Gilbreath got a BS in mathematics at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Following graduate work in applied mathematics, which saw him work under C. C. Chang, he spent his entire career at the Rand Corporation as an expert on compilers and optimization tasks. His book ''Magic for an Audience'' was published in 1989 as a series of three articles in ''Genii Magazine''. He lives in Los Angeles and performed regularly in the 2000s at Hollywood's Magic Castle. A Gilbreath shuffle is a way to shuffle a deck of cards, named after mathematician Norman Gilbreath (also known for Gilbreath's conjecture). François Proth (22 March 1852 – 21 January 1879) was a French self-taught mathematician farmer who lived in Vaux-devant-Damloup near Verdun, France. He stated four primality-related theorems. The most famous of these, Proth's theorem, can be used to test whether a Proth number (a number of the form ''k''2''n'' + 1 with ''k'' odd and ''k'' < 2''n'') is prime. SWAC (computer)
The SWAC (Standards Western Automatic Computer) was an early electronic digital computer built in 1950 by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards (NBS) in Los Angeles, California. It was designed by Harry Huskey. Overview Like the SEAC which was built about the same time, the SWAC was a small-scale interim computer designed to be built quickly and put into operation while the NBS waited for more powerful computers to be completed (in particular, the RAYDAC by Raytheon). The machine used 2,300 vacuum tubes. It had 256 words of memory, using Williams tubes, with each word being 37 bits. It had only seven basic operations: add, subtract, and multiply (single precision and double precision versions); comparison, data extraction, input and output.
