The Independent Printing House CDN (better known as CDN, ) was an underground printing house (''bibuła'') operating in Poland between 1982 and 1990. Formed after the imposition of the Martial Law in Poland, it focused on publishing various mostly history-related books. Apart from the modern history of Poland and Central Europe, the topics included also other topics banned by the Communist censorship, including sociology and politology. The CDN also published a number of magazines and music tapes, among them a series of cassettes featuring the songs of Jan Krzysztof Kelus. About 30 cassettes were released under the Phonographic Offices, including songs by Jan Krzysztof Kelus and Jacek Kaczmarski, performances by Jacek Fedorowicz. The Polish underground press, devoted to prohibited materials ( sl. , lit. semitransparent blotting paper or, alternatively, , lit. second circulation), has a long history of combatting censorship of oppressive regimes in Poland. It existed throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, including under foreign occupation of the country, as well as during the totalitarian rule of the pro-Soviet government. Throughout the Eastern Bloc, ''bibuła'' published until the collapse of communism was known also as samizdat (''see below''). Martial Law In Poland
Martial law in Poland () existed between 13 December 1981 and 22 July 1983. The Polish United Workers' Party, government of the Polish People's Republic drastically restricted everyday life by introducing martial law and a military junta in an attempt to counter political opposition, in particular the Solidarity (Polish trade union), Solidarity movement. Since the late 1970s, Poland had been in a deep economic recession. Edward Gierek, First Secretary of the Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR), had obtained a series of large loans from foreign creditors to achieve better economic output. This instead resulted in a domestic crisis. Essential goods were heavily rationing, rationed, which acted as a stimulus to establishing the first anticommunist trade union in the Eastern Bloc, known as Solidarity (), in 1980. Jan Krzysztof Kelus
Jan Krzysztof Kelus, also known by his initials JKK, (born 1942) is a Polish singer, poet, composer, and a member of the democratic opposition in Poland between the 1960s and 1980s. A professional sociologist, Kelus is best known for a number of ballads which gained him a nickname of the ''Bard of the opposition'' and ''Polish Woody Guthrie''. After a brief period at the faculty of law, Kelus graduated from the faculty of sociology of the Warsaw University. After the events of March 1968 he became involved in various groups of the democratic opposition to the Communist regime of the People's Republic of Poland. Arrested in 1969 for his involvement in smuggling books published in Paris by Jerzy Giedroyc's ''Kultura'' through the Tatra Mountains, he was sentenced to imprisonment in the so-called Tatra Climbers' Trial.
