Niel, Belgium
Niel () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Antwerp. The municipality only comprises the town of Niel proper. In 2021, Niel had a total population of 10,493. The total area is 5.27 km2. History Niel used to belong to the Lordship of Mechelen. In 1462, it became part of the Duchy of Brabant. Niel became an independent parish in the 14th century. During most of its history, it was an agricultural community along the Rupel river. In the 19th century, Niel became an industrial town with brickworks, cement factories and shoe factories. Sports Niel is home to the Niel Jaarmarkt Cyclo-cross, a cyclo-cross race held in and around the town. The race forms part of the X²O Badkamers Trophy. The Arrondissement of Antwerp (; ) is one of the three administrative arrondissements in Antwerp Province, Belgium. It is both an administrative and a judicial arrondissement. The territory of the Judicial Arrondissement of Antwerp coincides with that of the Administrative Arrondissement of Antwerp. History The Arrondissement of Antwerp was created in 1800 as the first arrondissement in the Department of Deux-Nèthes (). It originally comprised the cantons of Antwerp, Boom, Berchem, Brecht, Ekeren and Zandhoven. In 1923, the then municipalities of Burcht and Zwijndrecht (Burcht was merged into Zwijndrecht in 1977 to form the municipality of Zwijndrecht) in the Arrondissement of Sint-Niklaas were added to the arrondissement. Jan Decleir (born as ''Jan Amanda Gustaaf Decleir'' on 14 February 1946) is a prolific Belgian movie and stage actor born in Niel, Antwerp. Career He had his first big role in Fons Rademakers's ''Mira'' (1971). Since then, he has appeared in countless Flemish and Dutch films and TV productions. In the world of theater he gained his fame by acting at the International New Scene for the play Mistero Buffo by Dario Fo. To the larger audiences of television he became known through his role of ''Sil de strandjutter'' in 1976 in the equally named TV series.
