Nichols, California
Nichols is an unincorporated community in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It is on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad west of Pittsburg, at an elevation of 62 feet (19 m). The place is named for William H. Nichols, president of the General Chemical Company of New York, which built in 1909 a plant here to produce fertilizer and a number of other chemicals for industrial use. In 1921, General Chemical became a division of Nichols's Allied Chemical, later Allied Corporation Allied Corp. was a major American company with operations in the chemical, aerospace, automotive, oil and gas industries. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. Atchison, Topeka And Santa Fe Railroad
The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway , often referred to as the Santa Fe or AT&SF, was one of the larger railroads in the United States. The railroad was chartered in February 1859 to serve the cities of Atchison and Topeka, Kansas, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. The railroad reached the Kansas– Colorado border in 1873 and Pueblo, Colorado, in 1876. To create a demand for its services, the railroad set up real estate offices and sold farmland from the land grants that it was awarded by Congress. Despite being chartered to serve the city, the railroad chose to bypass Santa Fe, due to the engineering challenges of the mountainous terrain.
